What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?
Currently downloading the 3.1 update for Final Fantasy X|V in preparation for when my friend comes over tomorrow. Gonna show him how not to suck as a tank.

RE: What's everyone up to right now?
I was in this chat room last night. It went from being a horrible debate about music, to this debate where this guy was making all these baseless assertions. He was saying "who founded atheism" "atheism is like a religion" "define god" "god is everything, so if you don't believe in god, atheism doesn't exist" "so do you believe that god doesn't exist?" I answered his questions by saying, no one founded atheism, I linked him the definition of religion (to which he said "you don't even know who came up with the definition so you're statement is invalid"), I told him that atheism isn't a belief, it's a lack of belief, I can't define god because it's whatever you've made up.

That brings me to what I'm so frustrated about. People say that atheism is a belief that there isn't a god. That seems like a false paradigm. It makes it sound like you either believe there's a god, or you believe there isn't a god. I believe that god is a delusion in people's heads, which is just their own thoughts and feelings. I didn't arrive at the position of not believing in god, because of some force of will to believe he doesn't exist. Doesn't that seem like a disingenuous representation of atheism?

The one thing that makes me so angry is the "you don't even know who came up with the definition, so your statement is invalid". GRRRRRR! What kind of bullshit is this? It's the fucking dictionary definition of religion "the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods." It's fucking categorically false to say atheism is like a religion. But these people don't need to fucking thing about what they're saying. It's so disgusting, the guy was like "oh hey you see I'm making you think" because his questions were just these big fucked up "tests", to try to confuse me. He was high off his ass on something too. After the argument he put on his headphones and had this massive dumb grin plastered on his face, with his eyes closed just bobbing his head to music. I swear, is this how social workers feel?

I agree but it all gets a lot easier once you stop giving a fuck what these sorts of people - the strawmanning misrepresenters - actually think.

One tiny pedantic correction and a pet peeve of mine: Atheism is an absence not a lack. A lack implies a deficiency, almost as if it's not only that if we did believe we would, but that we also should. I disagree with anyone who says "lack of belief" because "absence of belief" is much more accurate IMO.

Like if I ever say I "lack" something what would that suggest to you? That it was merely absent or that I thought I ought to possess it? There's absolutely no part of me that wishes that I believed in God.

I was browsing YouTube for a bit today when I accidentally stumbled on a beautiful song that I can't stop listening to. I'm completely enchanted. Clap

You're absolutely right. I use the word lack in a way that's misrepresentative.

Many people do. Common mistake and that's why I call it a "pet peeve" of mine.

Another pet peeve of mine is the common misunderstanding of the NTS fallacy that I myself even used to be guilty of, people who don't actually fully read the definition of the fallacy and they think that whenever you say "no true X or Y" that in itself is enough to be a logical fallacy. It's not. It's when you try and modify the original definition afterwards, when you dodge the rebuttal against you by saying something like "Oh ok X is Y but no TRUE X is Y".

Just finished eating. Time for a nap. Who knew pork and sauerkraut could have the same effect as turkey?
