I have serious doubts that the staff would abuse the power.
They're probably too busy abusing themselves.
Wait, what? What was that? I thought I heard something..

I don't view it as 'trying to make the site better'. I view it as a gross over-reaction.

How could you possibly know whether or not it's an overreaction?
I think you're a valuable poster, in fact I even voted for you in the Member Awards, but if you trust the AF Staff so little, don't let the door hit'cha. These are extremely fair-minded individuals, and I am absolutely positive they didn't come to this decision lightly.

You are former staff, of course you would say that. Don't get me wrong most of the staff on this site are awesome and all but that doesn't stop them from abusing their power.

According to the new 'rule,' the entire staff has to vote unanimously before someone in question, is banned...and one vote against that, will cause the person to not be banned. Seems to me that this is a safeguard to prevent abuse of 'power.'

And when has that ever happened?

You haven't been here nearly long enough to make assumptions about what Staff does nor what I would say about them.

I don't disagree, but keep in mind that in small social circles (even if we're talking merely about online groups) the unanimity rule doesn't work as well because there's unavoidable pressure on people. In an assembly with 500 people who don't know each other, it might work perfectly, but it's not as good when we're talking about a group the size of AF's moderation team. I'm not saying it will corrupt you, I'm saying it is easier in groups like this.

Oh alright, I'll just stay silent on the matter due to my time on the forum not being as long as yours. Okay then.

I've been a member of this forum for a while, and while I'm not always around posting, I've seen various 'characters' come and go, and the staff has always been MORE THAN patient with some truly offending members. I have yet to see any mod/admin 'abuse' their authority, here.

Just for clarification:
As has been pointed out many times, no one member of Staff has the authority to act unilaterally other than with regard to routine bread and butter work. Higher order actions such as bannings require a consensus of Staff before they can be carried out; and even permanent bans can be repealed. With this new option, the safeguards are built in precisely so that it cannot be abused.
At the risk of inciting more panic, the only power you ought to be afraid of is the purging we unleash on spammers. You know, the way we tidy up the place for everyone. I don't hear much complaining or fearmongering about that.
