I disagree with Penrose on almost every point.  In a way it's kind of invigorating.  However I'm afraid I'll lose interest after he's covered his main argument and proceeded on to the math heavy and speculative second half of the book.

I suppose I could turn on Netflix...

I find invoking quantum woo is the quickest way to lose my interest, and that is, in essence, Penrose's argument.

It's worse than that. He's arguing that Godel's theorem demonstrates that mathematicians can reason using a non-computable algorithm. His explanation of Godel is distinctly lacking in detail. I find this entire line of reasoning unpersuasive.

True cubeville story:

I noticed the guy next to me dumped his Big Gulp on the keyboard of his work station (this was the late 80s, BTW, so the work station was a piece of shit) thinking quickly, I dove under his table to unplug everything from the electricity.

Just as I grabbed the cord, the icy beverage poured down on my hand and I yelped.

The guy that dumped the drink bent over to see what the commotion was under the table, and as he did so, loudly ripped out the seat of his pants.

We both burst into laughter as a crowd accumulated in our cube, him sitting unnaturally upright in his chair, and me sprawled on the floor. At some point, my laughing was construed as an indication I was being electrocuted, and suddenly somebody was pulling on my leg to get me away from the outlet.

Eventually order was restored, we all had to explain repeatedly what happened as various levels of management and maintenance showed up to see what the hell was going on.
