Trying to decide on a translation of Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. It appears the most cited translation, that of Pevear and Volokhonsky, may be more a triumph of marketing than an actually good translation. This leaves me scrambling to find an authentically good translation. Garnett is free, but has received a lot of bad press, for reasons unknown.

Finally on my way home. Someone came in with a puppy and sat with us. I had to pretend the thing was cute and stroke the thing, then pretend it was adorable when it bit my finger. Now I stink of dog and need 10 showers and a new coat. Ewww!

Finishing up a mortadella and colby sandwich and wheat thins.

I just might do it again! Because, as this song on Spotify says: "I just can't get enough."

Not long got back after taking Shell home. She stayed over the flat last night, helping me sort through some stuff of mine and Sam's. Relived many, many memories, deliriously happy and achingly sad, and had to make some very painful executive decisions about what to keep and what's junk. Found a lot of Valentine, birthday and xmas cards, along with innumerable relics of another life; one I clearly remember and still acutely feel. Slow work, as might be imagined, so she's staying again next weekend.
In lighter moments, had Shell reduced to tears of laughter with my impressions of Johnny 5 ("Oooh, right on the sensor!") and Lloyd Grossman. That last one's tricky; if I Lloyd without due care and attention, he develops a rather charming but incongruous Morningside accent.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Jager and coffee. I didn't budget enough for coffee, booze, and cola. I've used a pound of coffee in the past week, 16 liters of cola, a bottle of cinnamon flavored whiskey, and a third of a liter of Jager. I'm flat broke this month because of Christmas, but I'll be able to expand those categories next month.
