Re-watching the Korean soap opera, Winter Sonata.  I'm up to episode 5, but my favorite episodes are around 13 and 14.  It's about an hour an episode, so I've got a ways to go to the really good parts.

My wife watches some Korean soaps and swears by them. I'm not a soap opera buff by any means, but I'm willing to check one out for at least a few episodes just for the hell of it. Seriously, are they remotely equal to the hype I've heard and read?

I don't know how to answer that question. They tend to be very formulaic and over-produced, thus leading to the extremes of drama in them. I suppose like everything else, it's a love em or hate em type deal. They tend to have a very strong 'feel' that is different from English dramas. I suppose you either like that or you don't.
