What's everyone up to right now?

My daughter (the one in the homecoming pics) is so into Kpop (Korean pop music) that she's taken an interest in all things Korean. She's got me hooked on listening to a group called BTS (Ban Tan Soneydan. Don't hold me to that spelling). In English it means Bulletproof Boy Scouts. You'll notice I share or like stuff about them on Facebook from time to time.

Listening to my daughter sing along with some of their songs, one would think she's fluent in Korean, seriously. But it's something that we can bond over and she gets to teach me something for a change Smile

Second language acquisition kicked my ass even with Spanish and French. To leave the realm of common roots altogether and go where even the alphabet is so strange. No way! *shudders*

I was following J-vloggers for a long time on YouTube, and yes, other writing systems are scary to me. As much as I'd love to make he grand Lost In Translation tour, the language barrier would terrify me. I did 2 years of Spanish in HS, and 1 year of French (IIRC) and took to French much, much better, despite the wonky spelling and despite my being from the Mexican border area.

The presence of ㄴ in the second syllable seems as though it should be pronounced, in addition to the one immediately preceding it, but a young lady on one of the sites I looked at was quite insistent that the syllables should run together and the two 'n's should not be pronounced separately.

I don't know. Perhaps Drich can set me straight.

If I'm correct, ahn-yeong means hello.

That's correct. I don't know whether 안녕 is considered appropriate for any-old 'hi' or whether it's considered too informal for certain greetings. There are rules of which I am now unfamiliar that govern when and with whom one speaks informally or formally.

I'm literally 24 hours into trying to learn this stuff, so I have a long way to go.

Well if it makes you all feel any better, I also know sign language. It was the first language my oldest daughter learned because by age five, the total number of words she would verbally speak, was ten. Signing was crucial in our home.

So there's that.

Oh... and Savannah can also speak decent German. She's in her second year of it at school. Our house is always fun. She walks around speaking some strange mixture of German, Korean and English and I'm just over here like WTF was that?

Well you've made remarkable progress for just 24 hours.

Oh.. a funny... she'll walk in, look at her brothers and say ahn-yeong hässlich which is Korean German for "hello ugly".

My house sometimes, tho. smdh.

Thanks!

I find considerable motivation in spitefulness. I'm determined to learn Korean faster and speak/read it better than my Korean-born, California-raised wife. 'Cause I'm sort of a bastard that way.   Tongue

Hmmmmm. I am listening to a very happy song with almost excessive amounts of cowbell. I normally think cowbell should be used sparingly (despite all the jokes about "needs more cowbell") . . . but the almost excessive amounts of cowbell in this song fucking rocks the hell out of it.

Listening to 80's pop on YouTube, accepting my middleagedness.

Looking for an 80's needle in a lovesong haystack. Barry? Perry? Did the song have "red" or (but not and) "velevt" in it?  Undecided
