RE: What's everyone up to right now?
December 17, 2017 at 9:45 pm
(This post was last modified: December 17, 2017 at 9:46 pm by Astreja.)
Started the day by shoveling snow, clearing paths from the front sidewalk all the way to the back of the garage. Had to exercise caution because my lower back has been sore from lifting stuff (I've been bringing in some fairly hefty flat-pack furniture and lots of groceries, and took an old microwave oven to be recycled), but managed to not aggravate the injury. It helped that the weather was mild, so I didn't have to shovel like a maniac and run back in the house to warm up.
Had to go out to buy a bus pass for the coming work week, so I went on a little expedition with the car: Drop off mass quantities of cardboard (from the recent furniture purchases) at a recycling depot, get bus pass, have lunch at a nice café, locate obscure ingredients for Christmas cooking.
When I got home I tried out a recipe for Dutch speculaas (rectangular spice cookies, often stamped with a windmill design). Dough has been sitting in the fridge for a few hours and it's almost time to bake them. After that I'll fry some burgers, put in a bit of clarinet practice, and call it a night.

Up early, waiting for the garage door repair man.

Watching NPR's Korva Coleman (sp?) on Facebook. Never knew this was a thing.

A nightmare I had today brought me back in time.
And I come here in tears to say thank you to all of you who know what I’m thanking them for. I love you all. Thank you so, so much for being there.

Longhorn, I'm not aware of your story, but here's a (((hug))) for you anyway.
Just went best out of three falls with some useless decorative stuff that was riveted to my wallet. Using a stitch ripper, a pair of scissors and some needle-nose pliers, I now have a slightly thinner wallet without a lumpy logo right next to my bus pass.
And once the rush hour traffic settles down I'm going shopping (which will make the wallet thinner still). We have Secret Santa at work on Thursday and I'd rather be done and have the wrapped Secret Santa Gift at my desk a couple of days early. Hitting a 24/7 drugstore or 7-11 or Waldemart (the store which must not be named) late Wednesday night on the way from a Christmas party is right out. I have to go to That Weird Swedish Place to pick up some storage boxes anyway, so there's a chance that at least part of the present is coming from there.

Ikea is quicker to type!
It's not the BBC here, you can say business names...
Anyway, I'm going to that place with the golden arches to get some lunch!

I just read a proof for the Schwars Inequality Proposition, and I must say that it was pretty cool reading. The proposition states that for any real numbers a1,a2,...,an,b1,b2,...,bn, we have |a1b1+a2b2+...+anbn| ≤ sqrt[(a1)^2 + (a2)^2+...+(an)^2]*sqrt[(b1)^2 +(b2)^2 +...+(bn)^2].

IKEA will always be "That weird Swedish place" to me. I realized I had gone through a wormhole into some alternate reality when I saw the arrows projected on the floor. The helpful guy in the yellow shirt waving from inside the monitor pretty much sealed the deal.
I got the boxes I was looking for, then hit the supermarket and curated a food basket consisting of assorted noms. Beats the heck out of giving LED candles, or an "as seen on TV" piece of breakable kitchen crap, or something seasonal like a snow globe or a "Merry Christmas" coffee cup. If for some reason I get stuck with it (we have the option of taking a wrapped present from the pile, or stealing someone else's unwrapped present), it'll be the best thing I've gotten in that gift exchange in years.
