RE: What's everyone up to right now?

Well, here's a depressing thing that just happened, computer wise.
For those of you who don't know, I'm one of those Disco Dans who still use CDs. Granted, at this point, it's mostly to rent CDs and rip them to my library of SD cards and hard drives, but I still use my laptop's optical drive (mostly when the local library still has them, and they still have a lot of them.) Earlier this afternoon, I successfully ripped a copy of Loreena McKennitt's
Troubadors on the Rhine, but a little less than an hour ago, I tried to rip Father John Misty's
Fear Fun. The optical drive was making a strange noise and absolutely refusing to play it. Fortunately, I have an external drive that ripped it no problem. I tried using another disc on the main drive and it did the same thing as before. I even tried using the disc I had successfully ripped mere hours before, and the results were the same. With characteristic optimism-bordering-on-cowardice, my Dad suggested I try using a lens cleaning disc, but that would still require the player to properly read the disc, so that failed. We figured out
it's pretty easy to replace it, but, unfortunately, they're becoming harder and harder to find. And it turns out that
Dell (and other laptop manufacturers) is in the process of phasing out built-in optical drives. We managed to find one for $40 while they're still available.
