Just got word from the wife that our *ahem* edibles arrived. Thank you bitcoin!
It's going to be a fine weekend. I think I'll spend some of it in New Orleans.

Oh yay. My philosophy group is going to be reading Marcus Aurelius for the 15th. Probably only about 100 pages or so, as they go slow, but I've committed to giving a 10 minute debate presentation on the ethics of meat eating on the 16th. It's not formal or anything, but it will still require preparation. And I've got until the 12th to read about 400 pages for another book club. So next week is going to be a clusterfuck, and the week after that is going to be even worse. *sigh*

(This post was last modified: May 3, 2019 at 10:09 pm by Rev. Rye.)
For some reason, I remembered this book I saw in a forum post somewhere. The name I can't remember, but I can't get the synopsis I've been told through wherever I read it years ago out of my head for some reason:
Apparently a major thrust of the novel is that the protagonist hears someone calling out to him "Hey You" and hears it as "Hey, Jew" and this leads him to somehow think that maybe, after all these years of living as a Gentile, he might actually have been Jewish all along.
I'm fairly certain I read about it in one of those "Worst books you've ever read" threads somewhere, but I can't find where that post was. I'm searching for the title, and the closest thing I'm getting is Indignation by Philip Roth (something similar happens to the protagonist of that novel, but he was raised Jewish all along), and I've actually read that book and that's not even close to the description of the plot. Any help in the right direction would be very appreciated.

Well, our house purchase is dead. The seller's reply to the repair request was so far from ours there was no way to negotiate a fair settlement so we told him to GFY.

Ripping library materials. Apparently the Twins are super hot this year but I have no time to watch baseball. I haz a sad. I thought I could watch the first 5-6 innings today, but I have to leave early to get some bank business done. There's a noon game tomorrow, but that may conflict with Cinco de Mayo events. I've yet to check what all is going on and when tomorrow.

Working on my budget. After totalling up all the charges and credits associated with my Walmart grocery pickup order, the best I can figure is that they undercharged me about 30 cents. But there's so many transactions and it's difficult to tell what they all correspond to without going back over the flurry of emails preceding the final transaction. I think I'll put in a couple dummy transactions just to keep a record of what should have been charged and what actually was charged, but other than that, I don't think that I'm going to bother. I can probably go ahead and reconcile the account for April, but I'm going to wait a while because I'm feeling lazy this morning, and I'd like to wait a few days in case any late posting transactions come filtering in. The biggest question is how much of the order to take out of groceries and how much to take out of miscellaneous, given that the billed amount and the transactions don't match up. I guess I'll just have to make an arbitrary decision.

Listening to some rather snazzy jazz music as I wait on hold for the next available customer service representative.
I emailed them last week about a bad experience, and they apologized and forwarded my concerns and questions to the manager at the store where I had the problem. He or she was supposed to respond in 48 hours. They didn't, so I emailed them again earlier this week. Again they forwarded it to the store manager and assured me that he or she would get back to me. Again they didn't. So now I'm on hold in order to talk to a live person. I should start billing some of these companies for my time.
