My dad works at a soft drink manufacturing plant. He was a blue-collar worker for like 25 years until he made Plant Supervisor. Even though his job is technically administrative now, he still has to walk all over the very dangerous plant which is sweatshop levels of hot on warm days. Sometimes syrup floods the floors and he has to walk through it. He wears steel-toe boots every day, but sometimes that's not enough protection. His feet (and especially his toenails) look gnarly. Sometimes people get caught in machines and lose limbs or die.

Last night, my dad was walking on a catwalk and it collapsed underneath him. If he had not managed to grab hold of something, he would have fallen on his head. He would have had a concussion or worse. And he did not document that he was injured at all, for fear of losing his job (he thinks HR would have said he exercised "poor judgement" by being up there in the first place). WHAT THE HELL? He could have friggin' died! I hate the company my dad works for and I want to sue the fuck out of them for the shit they've done to my dad.

It is very unsettling the perception in which all manner of employees are held now by many employers.

Thanks. Yeah, it's hard not to worry, especially since he is rarely operating on enough sleep. His company has employees working three different shifts, and they change shifts every two weeks. So he never has a chance to get used to his new schedule before he has to change again. What they're doing to their employees should be illegal.
