Also, somehow I managed to snag a copy of the old DVD (pre-Criterion] of Bresson’s A Man Escaped for $8.

He uses AI to bring very old footage to life. (deep learning and neural networks)

I just get lost in time with this. Steam trams, (the new fad, gas powered automobiles, which will never catch on, of course!) and lots of horses.
I'm noticing that not one person is obeying any road rules, because there aren't any! No different to being in India today!

The good news: my Joaquin Phoenix Joker mask is finally at the post office after all this time waiting and all this time asking the seller what’s even going on.

The bad news: for obvious reasons, it’s not actually coming until tomorrow.

More neutral news: it looks like a new film has been made worthy of the Deep Hurting Project and I can delay the point where I have to rely on Youtube uploads of horrible movies that my local library does not have For another week. I’ll give you a hint: it’s the story of a man. A man who happens to be very... slender.

And at one point, he says that no town has ever chosen to defund the police for reasons unrelated to them being broke. Then I remembered Last Podcast on the Left series I recently listened to and found that this wasn't quite accurate.




Of course, that said, instead of siphoning money from police departments to invest in communities and other means of enforcing the law, this was just Chief of Police flat-out refusing any federal funds out of some absurd "frontier spirit," resulting in a grossly understaffed police force (42 cops covering every type of violent crime in a city of 1.3 million) that didn't even bother to investigate a lot of the murders. A murder case might net a maximum of two days' worth investigation, and that's only if the victim was a rich white man. Otherwise, if it wasn't this simple, they wouldn't bother:



And if it was just a missing persons case, forget about any investigation. After all, the police can’t be expected to know where a child is if his parents don’t. And that's actually a direct quote from then-mayor Louie Welch. As a result, the Chief resigned shortly after the news came out that their inaction had passively aided in a record-breaking serial killing spree that only stopped because one of the killer's accomplices decided to kill him himself and turn himself in.

It should probably go without saying that this is precisely the sort of example defunded police departments shouldn't follow. Especially since, around this time, they decided their top priority should be cracking down on drugs and very little else.

Reading the forums, and thankful for the little things in life. Like this forum still being around. Missed you guys. Life has become quite busy, back to work after a brief layoff due to Covid. Grateful for things I took for granted, like clean soft sheets and hot tea on a rainy day. Hope you all have a great week, and that you're doing well, despite the chaos of the world right now.
