Well, I just got to meet one of my absolute hero's. A pioneering legend in his field. And he presented me a conundrum. I used to write a regular column in a podiatry journal. Stopped a few years ago because it was eating time and causing much controversy. And this guy, who's work I've admired since I was an undergraduate, said kind things about my work and said he'd love to see me do it again! He remembered it from way back then and sought me out to ask me!

Am now in agonies of indecision about whether to get back on the horse which threw me.

I don't want to say no but afraid to say yes. It was a job that became a hobby which became an obsession.

A very sexy bi-curious woman is on her way to pick me up and take me to a coffee shop... we haven't seen each other in a while, and um... I'm a damn mess. So I actually let my mom put makeup on me for like the 2nd time in my life... just so I wouldn't look so grungy and shit.

You are talking about feet, right?

Biomechanics actually. But yeah, feet are involved. Basically, all the normal mechanical principles (moments, vectors etc) should be applicable to human locomotion. But we're talking about a functional unit which has 32 muscles exerting forces across 40 or so joints, also affected by capsular patterns, ligament stiffnesses etc. Then you multiply it by two, include the neurological control mechanisms, the descending and ascending force patterns and a whole bunch of other stuff and the human foot makes the engineering which keeps a plane in the air look like child's play. And that's before you even start with disease processes! It's like the rubicks cube from hell.

Got back from work. Found some bloody tampons while cleaning the Ladies room. I figured I'd bring home and have some pussy flavored chamomile tea Smile

This is the style of thing. Couple of vids from a colleague of mine.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles...-18-S1.wmv

First one is a cadaver foot which they attached the extrinsic muscles to computer controlled cables on a rig, and tried to duplicate the function of human walking with bone pin markers in all the bones in an attempt to understand what the skeleton is doing.

Then, because that wasn't quite hardcore enough, the guy implanted bone pins with markers in all the major bones IN HIS OWN FOOT, so he could walk and run over testing equipment with the pins sticking out, and derive data of exactly how all the bones and joints in the lower limb behave during gait.

This is what science looks like!
