Which job? Advice sought

In most cases, earning the money only makes one miserable.

However, spending the money is what provides the happiness only if one has the means to spend it on what really makes him happy. Most people have to spend it on bills, which only makes them more miserable.

Sick and twisted loop we have conned ourselves into in relation to the monetary system.
In America studies have shown that income correlates strongly with happiness up to annual income of about $70,000. Higher than that and the connection weakens.

Also, I would not be surprised if there was some sort of correlation between debt and people having placed themselves there due to being fed up with the monetary system. They might think to themselves, Fuck these bills. It's my money and I'm going to spend it the way I want. Boom, instant debt.

That's interesting. Do you have a link for that? Do you remember if they had any explanation for those results?

I can only provide a personal anecdote - my own happiness probably peaked at about that level.

However, correlation is not causation and all that, and there were a lot of other factors that contributed to my level of personal satisfaction.

I do agree with the general principle of money not buying happiness. Money cannot buy back time, and if you're spending 40 or more hours a week doing something you don't like for better money - you will never get that time back. I'd personally rather do something I enjoy and make less.

Thank you Minimalist for the joke, that was nice.

I understand fully.

Well, the bottom line is that I can either get a guaranteed $27,000 or a not guaranteed car salesman position.

Since I retired I have in kept in touch with most of the people I knew while working. Most of them are miserable. The hate their jobs, their bosses, the system they work under, the tools given them to do their jobs, and the understanding that the first ones thrown out the door will be the workers if things get bad.

So I'd say go for the money whenever you can. If that's all the bosses care about it is all you should care about.

That is my primary concern.

I'm just not sure if selling cars will get me more than this job with the guaranteed salary. That is my main concern.

I'm also not even sure if I will get the car dealership job, it's not guaranteed, I would have to go on the interview for it and depending how tomorrow goes, I may be offered this other job before that happens

I remember reading that too. It had something to do with incurring higher expenses and more of them. Money apparently can't buy happiness. But, as Daniel Tosh points out, it buys a Wave Runner, and I've never seen anyone frown on one of those!

As for the OP, sales can be fun. If the Car-biz is something you want to try, I hope you like working every Saturday. That's when they sell the most cars. Look forward to working 6 days a week, and 12+ hours a day. Plus, you gotta be on your game at all times. If you don't appear sold, you won't be able to sell it to anyone else. People buy things that they can get excited about. Appearing excited and enthusiastic in what you are pitching them is HUGE. A lot of new salesman do well their first month, while its new. After the shine of the new job wears off, their productivity plummets. You have to play a role, and you have to be able to sustain it. Charisma, appearance, knowledge. Those 3 things will help you make money in face to face sales. Keep in mind, its straight commission in most Car Sales gigs, and if you ain't sellin', you ain't makin money.

Is there any reason why, even if you get the first job, you could not go to other interviews? Don't think the first company will have any loyalty to you. They won't. Therefore any loyalty you give them will probably be misplaced.

Look out for Numero Uno.

I have always ended up feeling like a sleezy cog in the materialistic machine when I've worked commissioned based sales. I fucking hated working in an office though, too. Good luck!
