Plus, there's not a lot to interviewing for a sales job at a car dealership. If you seem like you've got an outgoing personality, they'll give you a shot. The risk is pretty low for them. You'll get a few low checks while your training, but after that, if you don't produce, you'll quit. They won't even have to fire you. Commission has its upside from an employer's standpoint.

Would you recommend it then? Honestly?
Let me give you some insight: I'm confident that I could, but not cocky or naive enough to assume I will.
I am doing online courses for college...
I want stability and a good salary... I know commission is risky, if I don't sell, I won't make money. But is it so likely that I won't sell? Is it possible to even put a statistic on it assuming the car salesperson is very good, hard working, charismatic... If the salesman is not doing anything to hinder the prospects, is it likely he'll keep making sales or is the market saturated or people aren't buying as much right now?
I'm not worried that I won't be able to satisfy customers, I'm very charismatic, friendly, and articulate... I am just worried that all of that will not be enough because I know nothing about the business. I just don't want to have 4 good months and then 10 bad months or something which causes me to scramble for another job (which may be hard to find) and then fall behind on bills or something horrific.
I'm just trying to be responsible, that's all.
I don't want to be a car salesperson IF it is an irresponsible gamble. I'm not trying to gamble with my life, I'm just trying to earn a lot of money and be successful while I attend college as much as possible.

It's really hard to say without knowing you personally. The cockiness, is kind of a plus. Successful car guys are usually pretty cocky. You won't have to know much about the business to start. The finance director will crunch the numbers and tell you what you can offer the customer. It'll take some time before you learn how to make more money off of somebody that doesn't know what their doing. More money in used cars than new also. None of that matters though. You have to go in, and talk to everyone that pulls into the lot. Where I worked, you approached them before they got out of their car. We all stood in front of the store and met people as they pulled into the lot. We called the spot that we waited at "The Point". Customers will come in, and waste your time. They will look at cars WAY out of their price range that they will have no chance of getting a loan for, but you have to sell them something else. People will come in looking for a certain kind of car, you won't have it, but you have to put them in something else. You can't let them leave. If you have no problem talking to strangers (of ALL sorts, sizes, ages, races, ethnicity), and you will continue to find potential customers, then you'll sell some cars. There are down times, and you'll have to go off of internet leads generated from online inquiries. You'll have to call people that came in, and said "I'll need to think about it". Plus, it depends on your area. I don't know how productive the dealership your considering is. But, if you call, ask to talk to the floor manager, pretend to be a Credit Union, and ask how many cars they sell a month. It's really REALLY time consuming. If you're thinking about juggling school with this, forget about it. If you're doing what you're supposed to be doing at work, you'll be too tired for homework. I guarantee it. Especially your first month.

Thanks so much Texas Sailor, I think you saved me from a bad decision.
After what you describe, I don't think car sales would be ideal for me right now because I need to focus more on my life and my studies.
That was relatively painless and simplified!
You're awesome, I'm giving you rep!

Lol , you're welcome bro. Glad I could help . There's a reason I joined The Navy, and it's not because the car biz was amazing.

Thanks Violet, thanks everyone again.
They loved me today at the second interview and offered me a position as an optometry technician. I accepted. We'll see how it goes. I'll work hard and smile and be charismatic and if it pays off then great, all I can do is my own part.
Where I live in Maryland, Anne Arundel County, is one of the most expensive cost of living places in America.... so most people struggle who aren't in the peak of their professional career unless they have a very good career.

Roommates and home cooking for the win.
