Questioning My Religion

RE: Questioning My Religion
Ah, but have you ever sold your soul to Santa?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Sorry to hear about the disappearance of your beloved cat.

But sadly, cats disappear for all sorts of reasons. None of them supernatural.

I live in a foothill community near Los Angeles. Cats fall prey coyotes around here often.

Even without coyotes, there are cars to contend with, or they can get trapped under houses, in sheds, etc. Many times cats can be ill without too many outward signs. Cats tend to crawl into hidden areas to die.

The natural explanations for your cat's disappearance are endless. To jump to a supernatural explanation in lieu of one of the many natural explanations is pretty irrational. The fact that you talked to yourself about a 'sign' is a non-sequitur. No different than a Wiccan 'casting a spell'.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Many years ago the cat we had at the time disappeared for about a month, then came back by herself. Then a month later vanished again.

We found out that she'd adopted a new owner a couple of streets away and was operating a kind of 'time share' scheme between the two homes - month on, month off.

I know it is tough, and do not read into that dissappearance of your beloved pet.

I will just cut to the chase, I was a preachers kid and dedicated christian for nearly 15 plus years starting in my teenage years up until i turned 25. I always had doubts on Gods existence (atleast the theistic one) but I ignored it for various reasons. I will not tell you that he does or does not exists, but use your logic and reason. Those two thought process will serve you more. Finally listen to your "heart" you know the answer and follow the evidence. Use your brain, and also feel free to ask questions. It is okay to doubt it is your mind and your life. Also, I know how it feels to lose beloved pets, I lost my two cats Smoky and Luna to either cars or wild animals.

I was born into a Catholic family, but in about 4th grade, I told my parents I was done with doing "CCD" I stopped doing that, and in about middle school i was "agnostic" then that quickly progressed to being "atheist' It never made sense to me.

If there's fossil evidence of humans being on Earth for a few hundred thousand years, and creatures being on earth for well over a few hundred million years, just the story of jesus christ being only 2,000 years ago never made sense to me. There's many more reasons I doubt Christianity, and religion in general, but I wont get into that.

Last week, as I remember, I was laying in bed, doubting the existence of god. and I said to myself in my head "if there was a god, he'd show me a sign he's real, he would be able to prove his existence to me. If theres a god, do something drastic in my life, change something drastic." At the moment I was laying in bed with my cat and was thinking somewhat along the lines of "Hopefully my cat will be okay" or maybe "Take my cat or something prove it" then I backtracked and was like "wait just do anything but the cat, do something good in my life"

Days later..... Sprite, my beautiful siamese cat, who was 10 young years of age, and happier than hes ever been in his life..... Is gone.

My best friend, is gone.

I'm so god damn perplexed. Did a "god" actually hear me and to spite me my cat is lost? or stolen?

It's really puzzling me, and now I've been depressed since.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? I'm struggling to even get on with my life. I really really miss my cat, he was truly my bud.

Now I'm questioning my faith... Is there really a god? Could he have seriously spited me? Or is this just an unlucky turn of events?

There really is a God. He's a character in a book. Someone told me they were my father, could this be Darth Vader trying to communicate with me?

Shit happens. It would be nice if we lived in a world where this isn't the case, but we don't. Rebelling against it by trying to straighten what will never be straight by inventing explanations will simply drive you mad. I will note, however, that your posts and thoughts bear the signature of clinical depression, and that it is natural when depressed to have your thinking "spiral" in this way (it's called 'rumination'). I'm not a doctor, and I'm drawing large conclusions from small evidences, but it may be the depression which is causing you such disturbance, and this obsessing about the loss of your cat is simply 'the form' that the depressiive process is taking.

Anyway, just my two cents worth. Hope I haven't been too forward or assuming.
