first, you assume the story is irrational. second, just because someone believes something that seems unreasonable or something that is not true doesn't mean they're irrational in that belief. someone is rational when they can use reason or logic to justify their beliefs. the logic itself does not prove the proposition true but it makes it rational to believe the proposition.
I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them.
