I have a question, Mac or PC?

RE: I have a question, Mac or PC?
Have you checked the average kernel of Ubuntu Linux lately? Not exactly the prime example of efficiency anymore. Yes you can optimize a lot, take out the redundant stuff, but so you can on the registry.

The next version of Ubuntu uses the most recent Linux kernel, which includes a f*ckload of speed boosts. I predict speedtests will once again have Ubuntu above Windows (yes, even 7) in terms of startup, and just generally.

I'm sure it does. The point I was trying to make though that it really doesn't matter which way you set up your system, you can speed it up with any OS by having proper maintenance on them.

Fair enough, my original point was that Linux / Mac make it much easier to maintain. The NTFS and FAT file systems are flawed in many ways and require regular defrags, whilst Ext / Reiser file systems don't (I believe the Ext3/Ext4 file systems work perfectly well until about 90% filled).

EXT3 has performance issues with large files, which is why we had to convert to XFS for a Linux server that streams media files for MTV. EXT4 is supposed to reach the same performance level as XFS, but that has not been tested by us yet.

The best way I know to keep my computer running fast is just to open it up and disasemble it completely every 4-6 months, and completely clean everything and get all the dirt out of the heatsinks. My computer is 3 years old now, has a 1.8 GHz processor, and is faster than the one my neighbour has, that is the same age, and has a 3.0GHz processor, and has never been cleaned. Mine has way more stuff loaded onto it, as well as windows vista (not so bad after you take the time to configure it properly), his has windows xp, and not nearly as many programs and random crap.
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

That's weird. I personally would always assume that speed and responsiveness are related to software more than hardware issues.

Its all to do with heat. The hotter a component is the slower it performs. You see people applying liquid nitrogen to their processors to do some crazy over clocking, this is similar.

The new gallium processors that are being developed are crazy compared to our sillicon ones, they got one to go at some 300GHz with normal cooling, and with liquid nitrogen at nearly twice that. All for a very short period of time though, can't wait til those are in our personal computers.
