The title of this thread and the above quote bother me.

Who's this 'we' you are referring to? The only thing that all atheists necessarily have in common is our disbelief in gods. EVERYTHING else is outside the purview of atheism.

It sounds like you are looking for an authority to tell you what to think. Sorry to tell you, there is no atheist doctrine or dogma for you to follow. It is up to you to find your own way and think for yourself.

For the vast majority of atheists, our atheism is a by product of our skepticism. Atheism is just a rational application of skepticism applied to the god claim.

Seeing some of your other threads, it is obvious that you are not a skeptic.

Here's the proof - You said in another thread, "I'm an atheist but i still believe some spiritual things that have no evidence, shoot me"

It would seem that you don't care whether your beliefs are true. Most atheists care whether our beliefs are true, or at least likely to be true. The best way to go about having true beliefs, and eliminating false beliefs, is to not believe things until they are supported by evidence, and not a second before.

Now of course, that is up to to decide if you want to care if your beliefs are true or not.

ya man, originally i decided to be atheist, but still believe in heaven and that i will have an angel girlfriend after i die, but when i made a thread about it everyone said it was stupid, so i just want to make sure i believe the right thing.

so can i still be an atheist and believe in Angel and heaven? in oen of my earlier threads soemone said that there are plenty of "spiritual atheists"...are there any spiritual athesits here?

Leo, how old are you? Do you understand the term "critical thinking"? I'm not trying to be mean... I just don't get how you don't understand: you can believe or disbelieve just about anything. The only thing that makes one an atheist is his or her lack of a belief in deities.

Can I ask: how did you "decide" to be an atheist?

but i still WANT to believe that after i die, i will go to heaven and have a girlfriend. (obviously i can't have one here anymore :| ) even when i was a christian, i always said to myself, after i die, i will go to heaven and have girlfriend.

I'm sorry if you think I was putting you down; it wasn't my intention. I think what you're referring to is when I asked how someone can choose to have belief.

I'm really sorry about your brain injury, and thank you for your service.

Can you understand the difference between believing something and wanting something to be true? Also, can I ask: why do you think you "obviously" can't have a girlfriend?

RE: what is our stance on holistic medicine?
i don't think i will get a girlfriend because even before the military i always been super awkard with girls, i have a very high strung/hyperactive personality which people love me cuz im funny, but girls usually want a guy who is calm and collected.

and now the main problem i am dealing with, is my emotional control/depression problems. I been trying to finish college degree in computers, I am able to function mentally as far as the course work goes, but I have a hard time regulating my emotions now, I get angry, and the depression and wanting to die and start screaming and crying badly. I been in therapy a lot, and made some progress, but still not enough to hold out for a whole semester in college, I been enrolling every spring for the last few years, and having drop out half way through.

ANd now I'm getting older, most people graduate college around age 22, and I feel like the time is passing me by, and I just feel like theres nothing left in this life for me, I just wanna die and go to heaven and be happy.

Heaven doesn't exist. You have to find a way to be happy now, before it's too late.

Agreeing with Simon here.

@ 24 you don't know much nor have much experience.

As for "holistic" I am a fan of treating the whole illness, not just the symptoms in a revolving door medical practice. Many drugs are just given out with no investigation into whether the patient ACTUALLY needs said drug and would not be better served by say another drug altogether including lifestyle and dietary changes. IF by "holistic" you mean the whole situation surrounding the illness then yes it has a place in diagnosis.

IF you mean "New Age Holistic Complimentary/ Alternative Medicine" then NO most of it is woo woo but as stated above SOME herbs have passed the rigours of investigation.

Well, maybe I have a few insights to make you feel a little better!

First: I'm actually one of those women who prefers a goofy/funny partner over a calm and collected one. Have you tried getting to know girls online? Getting to know them a little before meeting them might solve your awkwardness, or at least lessen it a little.

Also, I graduated from college when I was almost 27, and have gone back several times since to further my education. You're never too old to learn new things, and as long as you're making progress, you'll get there eventually.

As for the depression, is that what you're being treated for? Has anyone screened you for PTSD? Sorry I'm asking so many questions. I have a bit of experience with people and brain injuries, so I like to try to help Smile
