I read something I found peculiar

I read something I found peculiar
First, sorry I haven't been able to log on for a while. I've been busy doing.....I don't know what, but it seems lately I've always got something going on. Anyway I have mentioned before that I go to this moms group for mothers of kids in the autism spectrum and they are very 'Goddy' people, God tells them what to do and how to live their lives. I ignore that talk, but I do get valuable info for services and activities for my son, so I put up with the nonsenses.
Every week they have this word study where we have to watch, pray and meditate for this word in our lives. Usually it's words like guilt, self esteem, advocate, and so on. I usually don't participate because I'm not into this sort of thing. Well this week the words are 'made is his image'. Now I have never read the bible, I'm just not interested and I can't sit down and read a book anyway and the bible is a big book. Well just for shits and giggles I thought I would google 'made in his image. I read something that I found very peculiar.

26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

Let us? Our? What the hell does that mean? I thought there was only suppose to be one god. Does anyone know the spin on this? Just curious. Forgive me for being ignorantSmile

Hehe Smile Judaism used to be a polytheistic religion you know... the primary god figure even had a 'companion' goddess at one time.

I'm not entirely sure why they changed this religion into mono-theism though Tongue

Anyway, if you look at the angels, demons, the devil (2-3 different ones?), archangels, prophets, lesser-gods, greater-demons, father-son-ghost, virgin births, talking serpents, etc: It's pretty obvious where some of those older gods went Tongue

If I were Jewish I would be thoroughly confused. My head is already filled with all sorts of nonsense. Adding the bible to it would just make my head explode.

So I guess I will be thinking of my dad when I think of 'made in his image' this week.

It's on about the God spot inside all humans supposedly. Funny Evie just brought this up this week in a private convo. I've heard the creation story explained as animal (no spirit, material), angel (only spirit) and people (spirit and material). It's an attempt to explain the potential of thought that distinguishes humans. It's our soul that is attracted to God/ that would be fulfilled _in_ God, just like finding perfect health.

There are many gods described in Christianity. Other than that Sae is way off the wall as usual Wink Heart

One of many things that have puzzled me over the many moons and stars be the one so close above.
(Had to add a touch of poetry)

What gets me a thinking is why would an all perfect non-temporal being have any need for an image? What would be the point if those who bare the gift of sight cannot witness the reflection of light from an image of might?

Being non-temporal means being beyond the phyical such as an image. So why bare an image?
What purpose would an image have for an all perfect god if he requires none and is beyond it?
Thinking Many questions I see.

Ok I'm done with da poetry thing.
Big Grin

Seriously though, I see no point to why god would have a physical image.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Define 'god' then ^_^ Most Christians deny that theirs is essentially polytheistic (the existence of angels, demons, etc. necessitate it). Smile Do you not see it like most Christians then? Smile

The question remains. What be the purpose of an image for an all perfect non-temporal god?

Like all Christians. Maybe you should know the first thing about something you try to criticize before making an ass of yourself?

Which I answered above.

RE: I read something I found peculiar
If you are acquainted with Jewish history and the history of the Hebrew scriptures, there is nothing peculiar with this scripture.

These scriptures were written at a time when the Israelites were polytheistic. That is, they worshipped many gods. Saerules is correct. She is not incorrect as fr0d0 claims.

In fact, Yahweh was regarded by most Israelites as nothing more than a mountain god at the time Moses supposedly went up the mountain.

Monotheism did not become a part of the Jewish faith until the time of the Babylonian exile. At that time the Israelites had became influenced by Persian Zoroastrianism. Persian Zoroastrianism is responsible for the belief in a spirit soul, a judgment day, heaven, hell, etc., basically the core beliefs of Christianity. Much of Judaism never embraced these doctrines. That is why you can read most of the Old Testament and not find support for Christian doctrines mentioned in anything written before that time.

And Christians deliberately misrepresent the Old Testament in this regard, trying to make the word "soul" mean a "spirit soul" throughout the Old Testament. That was not the belief of those who wrote the Old Testament. An accurate portrayal of Jewish belief about death is contained in Ecclesiastes 9:5 which clearly denies any afterlife for humans.

Don't be surprised if you find Christians hostile to what's written there. They will use every flim-flam trick in the book to deny what it actually says.
