Tough shit, Jake.
That church is perfectly willing to spread bullshit around to people who have lost everything. Let me know when they dip into their coffers to provide some real help....that does not merely entail rebuilding the fucking church.

Min, I think the world of you and all, but you can't seriously be unaware of the charitable work done the world over by churches. If nothing else, churches frequently serve as distribution points for food, water, and other supplies. Churches often specifically raise money to aid in disaster relief. Church-goers are usually among the people doing the work to rebuild homes, clear roads, deliver material to the affected and so on.
No one's asking you to buy into the rubbish promulgated by any particular church, but I don't think it's asking too much to acknowledge the HUGE amount of good done by churches and affiliated organisations.

Boru,
It is you that is delusional. The churches have huge strings attached to their aid and they often make the situation much worse, for example the anti-condom push in Africa and Haiti. Sure, they will send first aid and blankets, but their bread and butter is extracted from the poor. The rich are quickly too well educated for their nonsense.
The reason for the disaster is that the Philippine people are too poor to have built well engineered structures that could withstand storms of this nature. Their churches drain monies that could be spent to provide "high wind" safe structures.Their government opposes strict building codes because the religious conservatives push for "limited" government. The churches never ever try to fix the causes for these disasters to prevent them, no, because fear of death is their biggest sales tool.

That doesn't make it right, but that also doesn't make every use of the phrase "fucking Christians" rise to the level of bigotry and hatred.
Oh I share the distaste of those behaviors. Probably more so than you since I also experience embarrassment by association. I also experience frustration that there is a great desire among many Christians to feel persecuted and despised "because of their faith.". I try to tell them that no, people despise them for being whiny birches. But that job gets harder when people actually DO hate them for their religion (rather than their behaviour.

As my wife is nominally a Christian I have to say I quite like fucking her too.
Of course I have never fucked a Buddhist so I can readily make comparisons. You sir, win the Internet!

So in effect you are saying that even though all christians worship the same christ, read the same bible, talk to the same god in prayer, and are influenced and directed by the same holy spirit, that the direct infusion of the holy spirit is not strong enough to nudge them into being better, more consistent people. Not even enough to be indicated by statistics.
How pathetic.

First off, I don't recall accusing anyone else of being delusional, but let that go.
Secondly, I'm not sure what the RCC's idiotic policy on condoms has to do with the typhoon under discussion.
You're correct that the bread an butter of the church comes from people who can ill afford it, but so what? This isn't really an argument against the charitable work that churches do, but points to the gullibility of believers. But it isn't really arguable that, in times of crisis, churches DO step in to help. The fact that they (sometimes, not always) pick an choose who they will help is utterly beside the point.

Huh. I was under the impression that the reason for the disaster was a typhoon with 200+ mile per hour winds.
Quote:Their churches drain monies that could be spent to provide "high wind" safe structures.
Actually, they don't. The Philippines has a secular government, which would be responsible for building the type of structures you mentions, and doesn't financially support the churches.
Quote:Their government opposes strict building codes because the religious conservatives push for "limited" government.
You may be right about this, I honestly don't know. I DO know, however, that liberals, not religious conservatives, control the majority of the Philippine government.
Quote:The churches never ever try to fix the causes for these disasters to prevent them, no, because fear of death is their biggest sales tool.
lol, what would you have had the churches do - drag the Philippine archipelago out of the typhoon belt? Come on, mate - it isn't the church's job to prevent natural disasters.
But that's as may be. My point was that 'hating fucking Xtians' because a priest goes round blessing corpses and implying that this is ALL the church is doing is just silly. Whatever the strings, whatever the reasons, it's a brute fact that churches do a tremendous amount of charitable work.

The storm is simply expectable nature. The area gets strong storms every year. This last one was simply a bit stronger than the others.
A disaster occurs when mankind is not prepared for natural events. When they are prepared, no disaster occurs even though the storm is at the same level of ferocity.
As for the secular nature of the Philippine government, I never even alluded to the idea that they were theocraticly controlled. They suffer from the same stupidity that the U.S. does, in spite of being secular, the ignorant religious masses affect their government and their country for the worse.

Crap!
This is like saying that "generalizing" among the KKK is wrong because one can pick out a KKK member that has done something good in his life.
Is it wrong to say "I hate the fucking racist KKK" because there might be a helpful member or two amongst their ranks?
It is correct to generalize when we are referring to the movement called christianity, otherwise we couldn't ever say a thing about it because it is so fragmented and slightly different to each and every deluded individual. It is understood that there may be exceptions.
Athiesm is not a movement, it is simply a base, "unconvinced of god" state. One could call some of the online atheist groups a movement of sorts, but not in the manner that chistianity is a movement. Therefore to generalize about atheists is to commit a fallacy. To generalize about the christian movement is not.
