I'd rather religious asshats like the pope (and enrico's P.R. Sarkar) not pontificate on economics. They suck at it. The debate about free market capitalism is far from settled, and if I want an ignorant opinion on the subject, I'll ask the drunk at the end of the bar.

At least the guy at the end of the bar has a job and bills to pay like the rest of us. Unlike the pope who probably never worked a real job.

To be entirely honest I can't tell you of system that has done more to empower the middle class then capitalism.

Capitalism has enabled countless people to get out of poverty - that's the famous "American Dream". We were the first country in the world to achieve such a high standard of living and produce a middle class. Today people still come from all over the world because of the opportunities offered here. Most other world systems don't allow for any upward mobility., i.e., monarchies, dictatorships, communism. As far as the Catholic church goes, it has been the forefront of providing aid to the poor for the last century at least.
The USA first to produce a middle class? You are joking of course! Middle classes predate the settlement of America
