Thanksgiving. American holiday, all nations welcome

I will be having Thanksgiving lunch with my mother, brother, and father. Possibly also my drunk, prescription drug-addicted, suicidal grandmother. I'm hoping not. I'm on my period and I might say something reckless and rude to her. My father's side of the family is in Chicago, and my biological father's side of the family has never tried to spend Thanksgiving with us, for some reason.

...my wife does. Hell, it's 4:30 AM and I'm up to grill a 15 pound turkey for just four of us. This is effing ridiculous. Worse, my wife is working today, fully expecting her relief manager to call out too. I'm gonna get stuck doing up her whole menu. Fuck this....a day of thanks my ass. At least I have beer.

I like Thanksgiving! I like Christmas, I like Easter, I like everything! Except Valentines Day... I HATE that day. I'm just rude like that. I am not thankful to the universe or a god for anything, I do not believe in baby Jesus, I do not believe in resurrection. So fucking what? I love excuses to make big dinners, invite friends and family, use my pretty dishes, and dress up. It's wonderful. To me, Thanksgiving is about cooking and wearing a dress. Christmas is about baking and meeting with family that live far away. Easter is about hiding eggs with candy and money for the kids. I'm not ashamed to say I'm atheist and party on these days. After all, I don't have a religion that says, "Don't do it. It's against your beliefs." Part of the beauty of being atheist. I can do whatever the fuck I want with out asking a priest.

So, to answer the OP: I make dinner including turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, asparagus, someone else brings something of their own, and wine is involved. I am not a lover of wine, but on this day I go along with it for kicks. I invite whoever I like enough to have in my house for hours.

On this corner of Europe, this is a standard and normal working day. Actually, there's a strike of the subway workers, today... even more traffic... great! -.-'
Anyway... On Christmas, there are a few traditional dishes from which families choose
- Bacalhau - look it up on google, you can grill it, roast it, boil it... christmas version is boiled with some boiled veggies and potatoes.... olive oil to help lubricate everything.
- Cabrito - young goat.. can't remember if there's a proper english word for it. Usually, roasted.
- Perú - that's turkey, the bird, not the country. Yes we too have some tradition of having a huge turkey served to the whole family... and then leftovers for a while.

The leftovers, mostly from the boiled bacalhau and veggies, gain the name "roupa velha" (old clothes) and we eat that for the remaining days...

Thanksgiving is by far my favorite holiday. There is something of a schism in my family, due to religious belief. I may have mentioned that before on here. There are two Thanksgiving celebrations: my sister's (also known as the "militant atheist Thanksgiving") and my aunt's (also known as the "pious Catholic Thanksgiving"). Since I refuse to take a side in their ridiculous debate...I get to eat at both celebrations. That's two Thanksgiving dinners (or rather, lunches) from noon to 4 pm. Then I will be heading over to my girlfriend's family's place for a Thanksgiving dinner!

That's three Thanksgiving meals in a row. Yes, it's safe to say this is my favorite holiday.
