Oh I know the idea of a torturous hell was a late edition. Satan as an evil individual was also a christian thing. Ha satan wasn't an individual in the old testament, and he certainly wasn't evil. It was a title.

Probably the closest thing they had before was that your soul would be destroyed. That's not going to go far to convert someone who doesn't believe in a soul anyway. Or would be happy to risk it, instead of serving a deity they don't like.

What it means is that the founding fathers were pretty educated people and they realized that, historically speaking, one of the things that often causes nations to crumble is state sponsered religious dogma, especially when the state dogma becomes the beliefs of the minority of the population.

Even if the founding fathers did believe in a sky fairy that would love the nation, they worked damned hard to put in human based checks and balances in a system of government that is completely unlike a theocracy. If they "really" believed in a loving interacting god, they would have installed a christian Khomeini type to rule with christian sharia type courts. It is proven that they did not believe in "divine" interaction by the fact that they built the government they did. At most they only gave "lip service" to christianity as so many do today to avoid the hard questions put forth by a silly belief in gods.
