I wish someone would explain exactly what they don't like about 8/8.1. I am stuck using Windows products for my work, because it is heavily reliant on a very old version of Excel (don't ask, just take me at my word here). I'm using Win 7 now and I quite like it. It's been problem-free for me. I am not a gamer and don't tax my computers much. I mostly buy new laptops because I wear out the old ones or I want the latest features.
The system I'm looking to purchase is another Toshiba desk top replacement laptop and it offers Win 8.1 without the touch screen feature. That sounds perfect to me. I had my step mom, who has a new notepad-type system with Win 8.1 on it that DOES have the touch screen feature, run the macros we use in Excel to do our work. According to her, it ran flawlessly -- so that's not an impediment, apparently.
I can get used to the 'no Start menu' thing. What else should I hate about Win 8.1 before I pull the trigger on a new system?

Based on my limited experience with it, once you get used to using it the way Microsoft wants it should be just fine. They want you using the start screen with the tiles instead of the desktop. Removing the start menu makes the desktop pretty useless and forces you to figure out how to configure and use the start screen. Once you get past that, you are good to go.
At least until Windows 9 changes something else.

Lol yes Linux has fanboys, I used to be one. Now a days I just dual boot mint and windows. I love mint because I can install it and forget it
