There's going to be cake? Well okay then, I'm in. What time is the meeting and when will the cake be served? This church idea is looking pretty good. (Are you sure there will be plenty of cake?)

Did you miss the part of my post where I said "You don't have to care, that's fair enough. I'm not asking you to"?
Well way to call out my reading comprehension skills. Guess I was just loosely free-associating to some of the words in the original post.
But now that you've reframed the question to eliminate wiggle room, let me see. "Do I, quite apart from whether it affects me personally, think it is a good idea for atheists to start their own church?" Hmmm .. no I just can't come down against it without knowing what they hope to get out of it. Of course theists dropping by here to tell us atheism is just another belief system will have more ammo. So for my personal convenience I'd prefer that they call it something else. (Whether my personal convenience should over-rule their own objectives is another question of course. )

That's effectively all I've been saying throughout the thread. I'm not against the idea in principle, I just object to it being called a church. I'll happily defend their right to call it a church. I am also exercising my right to say it's a total oxymoron to do so and because of that totally fucking stupid.
So unless they stop using the term church to describe their little get together, I'll just continue to assume the people organising it are a bunch of douchers who have a counter-productive approach to a secular gathering.

Like Christians are going to treat you fairly if you avoid doing certain things. Sounds like you're surrendering some of your autonomy and freedom to avoid false persecution, when doing so won't actually save you from false persecution after all. Standing up to them tends to be more effective than trying to avoid coming up on their radar.
I agree, athiests should perhaps build establishments of gathering and communing. And when pissy loudmouth christians start bitching, all individuals of the non christian persuasion (especially athiests) shall be like

OXYMORON!
Except that it isn't? It is *every* aspect of 'church', but absent the overarching Master. It is a church, still... but it has been abandoned by its lord, and now his children live in the house he built as their own lords.

It does sound like one on the surface, but it's really not. Were they to have a mosque's setup without God, then it would *still* be a mosque in every way sans-'spiritually'. What would we call it? A nonspiritual mosque is applicable... atheist's mosque would also be.
Tell me what differs such that the terms 'church' and 'atheist' fundamentally cannot be joined as an atheist's church.

It's actually a really effective way to get members... there are a LOT of atheists who do not hate religion, who simply don't believe, but who love church and its equivalents nonetheless.

I hate church... It's boring.
Nonetheless gay, corny, delirious, and just downright bland.
Reeks of decay too, becuase of all of the old people enclosed in one space.

I'm kind of fond of the smell. If your church experience was bland: you needed better music, or a better preacher.

Lolz. From "what do you think of atheist churches?" To (insert rage comic here) WHAT HAVE YOU GOT AGAINST TRANSGENDERISM?!?!
So... no. You want community, go to UU. That's my take, anyway.

What definition of church are you using?
Oxford English dictionary:
Quote:noun
a building used for public Christian worship:
Highlighted the words Christian and worship.
Free Dictionary:
Quote:1. A building for public, especially Christian worship.
Again, quoted the words Christian and worship.
Macmillan Dictionary:
Quote:a building that Christians go to in order to worship.
Quoted, yet again, the words CHRISTIAN and WORSHIP.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Church
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/defini...ish/church
http://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/di...can/church
Please explain to me how using any definition of the word "Church" in the context these atheists are using it, is anything but an oxymoron. These people are not Christian and they do not worship
Again, and this'll be the last time I say it on this damn thread, their use of the term "church" is downright retarded.
