The Special Olympics is stupid, the disabled don't need a special place to be athletic.

The "Special" Olympics is dumb

I think its just recognition for their efforts, much the same reason as the 'regular' Olympics
'The more I learn about people the more I like my dog'- Mark Twain
'You can have all the faith you want in spirits, and the afterlife, and heaven and hell, but when it comes to this world, don't be an idiot. Cause you can tell me you put your faith in God to put you through the day, but when it comes time to cross the road, I know you look both ways.' - Dr House “Young earth creationism is essentially the position that all of modern science, 90% of living scientists and 98% of living biologists, all major university biology departments, every major science journal, the American Academy of Sciences, and every major science organization in the world, are all wrong regarding the origins and development of life….but one particular tribe of uneducated, bronze aged, goat herders got it exactly right.” - Chuck Easttom "If my good friend Doctor Gasparri speaks badly of my mother, he can expect to get punched.....You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others. There is a limit." - Pope Francis on freedom of speech
It patronizing, especially the whole everyone gets a trophy bullshit.
Does everyone in the Paralympics get a trophy? I didn't know that.
Do you think that the Olympics is patronising as well?

I think the olympics is commercialism and nationalism run amok.
Many competitors in the SO will never have another experience similar to any sort of recognized success or accomplishment. The looks on their faces is justification enough for the existence of the SO.
Some of my kids at school attend Special Olympics. They really enjoy it and feel very special afterwards. I think it's a positive thing for them.

Watching those men/women give their all and compete with each other is amazing. It is so special for those people, and brings them joy and happiness.
And the disabled can do that by participating in regular athletic activity, special Olympics encourages segregation

Special Olympics encourages those with disabilites a place to compete with pride among others that are just like themselves. It's almost their own culture, a place to feel comfortable, at home, and to really give it their all. I think you might have a different perspective because you're blind. There's nothing wrong with you, only difference is you don't see well. Many people at Special Olympics are struggling with tougher diseases. |
