Adrianople's blow landed mainly on the Eastern empire whose emperor Valens perished therein.
Yet it was the Western half which fell less than 60 years later. Odd except it shows that the economic basis of the Roman world was in the East which was able to recover while the West was doomed.

Paul preaching to the Gentiles was a smart marketing move. A better marketing move was eliminating circumcision.
