I think diamonds are amazing minerals and I am pissed that the jewelry world smacked on some arbitrary value to them.
I do not ever plan to get married, but I am realizing that there may be a reason to do so one day (either for tax or insurance or whatever purposes). I'd like a plain black or silver band. If my future SO decides there should be a gem of some sort, opal will do - it matches EVERYTHING!

This is the one I bought way back when. She had to wait until our 10th anniversary to get it though.

Opals are amazing and easily my favorite stone because they are so beautiful, but they are not generally a good bet for a lifelong ring. They are "soft" on the gemological scale of hardness and are prone to breakage. They are much better for a pendant, where they won't be subjected to hard knocks. Just something to think about.
