So much of this^

*Faith in America decreases 15%*

Well, I should clarify. I'm not surprised, but I didn't know it either, hence the 15% decrease.

If you read the entire article, it later states that EU members polled did even worse with that question than Americans did.

I've just lost faith in humanity in general now.

Quote:As alarming as some of those deficits in science knowledge might appear, Americans fared better on several of the questions than similar, but older surveys of their Chinese and European counterparts.

Only 66 percent of people in a 2005 European Union poll answered the basic astronomy answer correctly. However, both China and the EU fared significantly better (66 percent and 70 percent, respectively) on the question about human evolution.

This really isn't that surprising considering the way things are taught in schools by bad, unqualified, or hands-tied teachers.

I really don't think I would have discovered a real fascination with history had it not been for one very determined teacher in 7th grade who insisted on saying "fuck it" to the standardized test we were always given and making sure we made it all the way up through at least Vietnam (this was a year for American history - they switched between that and world history all the way up to junior year of high school). Most American history years we made it barely through WWII.

And even world history years were woefully deficient. There are so many gaps in my knowledge I've since tried to fill with the help of multi-national friends I've made on the internet.
