Quote:The Armatix iP1 is now being sold in California and is considered to be the first true smart gun available on the market. The way the gun works is pretty simple: It won’t fire unless it’s in range of a special wristwatch, worn by the gun’s owner. When the wristwatch and the gun are in the required proximity to one another, a light embedded in the gun turns from red to green.
I think it sounds like a great idea, but I don't bet it'll be long before gun nuts spout conspiracy theories about the government manually shutting down their guns via socialist magic or something.
This is going to do absolutely nothing to reduce gun violence, as ANY technology can be circumvented. The notion that you can reduce gun violence by continually making guns available to virtually anyone is simply ludicrous.

What about the working classes who need guns to carry out anarchist communist eugenicist revolution? This will make guns more expensive & the government could theoretically shut them down. How will we have libertarian socialist revolution then?

Oh great - another thing that will need charging! oh, my mistake - 2 more things (the gun and the watch).
Its already almost impossible to sleep at night with all those little green lights flashing at me.
If I lose my watch do I have to buy a new gun?
If the gun works over bluetooth will it go off when I answer a call?
Can it play MP3's as well?

Honestly, I think its a good idea. Especially for those who have concerns about robbery and theft of their fire arms.
But, is it really necessary? I don't think so.
We already have safes, lock boxes, trigger locks and cable locks. I think it would be a good addition to gun safety if you are willing to pay for it.
Also, it would never be an acceptable means of locking a gun. In order to transport any hand gun in Maryland the magazine and ammunition must be separate and the gun must have a locking apparatus on it. There is no way this would ever be considered a safe means of locking a fire arm for transportation.

I guess if in range means inches, then if a burglar grabs your gun before you do, s/he can't just use it on you. I'm not sure if it will really help so much.

My bet is this is designed for people who are worried about other people (like kids) grabbing and using the gun. I think it has little do with reducing gun crime but rather making it less prone to accidents. If your gun is essentially a useless hunk of metal until you have it in your own hand then that's quite a nice safety mechanism to have.
