Apple's response to climate-deniers

Apple's response to climate-deniers
I think this deserves a round of applause for Apple.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/03/at-...content%29

Quote:At a shareholders meeting on Friday, CEO Tim Cook angrily defended Apple's environmentally-friendly practices against a request from the conservative National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR) to drop those practices if they ever became unprofitable.

NCPPR put forward a shareholder's proposal asking Apple to disclose how much it spends on sustainability programs. If those costs detracted from Apple's bottom line, the NCPPR demanded that Apple discontinue the programs and commit only to projects that are explicitly profitable. According to an account from MacObserver:
...
Quote:What ensued was the only time I can recall seeing Tim Cook angry, and he categorically rejected the worldview behind the NCPPR's advocacy. He said that there are many things Apple does because they are right and just, and that a return on investment (ROI) was not the primary consideration on such issues.

"When we work on making our devices accessible by the blind," he [Tim Cook] said, "I don't consider the bloody ROI." He said that the same thing about environmental issues, worker safety, and other areas where Apple is a leader.
...
It seems clear that Apple won't halt its projects for climate change deniers, and the rest of its shareholders weren't troubled by that at all. The NCPPR's proposal received just 2.95 percent of the vote.

Apparently conservatives would rather have our country like that of China... lots of profitable factory production but polluted as hell.

Same.

I have an iPod my father bought me several years ago that I use for when I work out, because my phone's battery is shite and I haven't found a music app I like. I'm hoping when I upgrade to the HTC this will change. Other than that, we're a strictly google/android house.

Then let them move there and reap the dubious rewards of their ideology.

Apple make my skin crawl.

There technology is about as friendly as a fucked off hornet who just found his hornet lady wife getting horny with his hornet buddy after getting home from a hard day at the hornet's nest.

It's not friendly. Is the point I was making.

I'm writing this on a dual boot laptop (Ubuntu and Windows) and spend eight hours of my day on a Mac.

It's nice to see that one of the organizations I source my software from is negatively responding to lunatics.

I'm a bit more cynical. Apple has a rep for being for lefty hipster arts students right? What better way to pander to them than this? The fact that I'm hearing about this now, that it has become news, speaks volumes.

You may think they are doing the right thing regard the environment, whatever, I have doubts as to whether they do the right thing for the right reasons however.

I somewhat agree. Apple is the brand that appeals to young, cool, liberal hipster types as a marketing model and I agree with you about being cynical and thinking this may be as much about appealing to their customer base as "doing the right thing" but I also somewhat don't care.

If they're doing this for "the right reasons" then fantastic.

If they're doing this to appeal to their customers and make money then that's typical corporate greed, but it's still corporate greed that's doing a good thing for the environment.

If they're doing it for some combination of both, or for some not-yet-revealed reason then they're still doing a good thing for the environment.

No matter their ultimate reason for doing it, it doesn't really change the fact that they're taking a stand on an issue that is important and that a majority of people agree is a good thing to do, and they're setting an example for other corporations to follow (for better or for worse, that's what multi-billion dollar corporations do) and in this case they're setting a positive example.
