I honestly think I've been lucky.
No, I get it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you haven't suffered from depression your whole life, right? That's the difference. For some reason (probably genetic) my brain never generated those "feel good" chemicals it was supposed to.

I was even depressed as a young child, I just didn't know that was what it was because I had never felt any other way. People who have the serotonin and dopamine working naturally don't know how lucky they are.

You are correct on both counts:

I first suffered from depression in my mid teens, and I honestly think that's what made the difference.

I can relate but I definitely can't imagine what it's like to live with it constantly.

For me I've found I have a good number of people I can talk to about it (and my work has a shrink on staff).

Never had to use those things...
One wonders... what sort of evolutionary pressures made depression something so prevalent?

Tricyclic. I'm actually mainly taking it mainly because it allegedly helps with the stomach problems I've been having. It doesn't really elevate my mood much, though. Then again, the last time I tried upping my antidepressant dosage, it ended up like this:

You'd be surprised at how little I'm exaggerating here.

I took 300mg daily for close to four years, along with several other drugs, concurrent with working with therapists regularly (weekly for most of the last 6 years).

I'm well enough that I don't take medication any more. I've learned to recognize the signs to watch for that indicate that I'm going over the rainbow, and have been able to deal with it. I haven't had any clinically significant symptoms of psychosis in over two years - there's a number of reasons that may be the case that aren't connected to medication, or so I've been told. (I will also state that my psychosis was generally pretty mild compared to others I've known)

I believe that the medication helped enough so that I could effectively participate in therapy - though it's the therapy that does the heavy lifting.

The thing to remember is that not everyone responds to psychiatric medication in the same way. If you think your medication isn't right, talk to your prescriber. Fire them if you have to and are able to.

They do when I take 'em. Careful what you wish for. Mania took a heavy, heavy toll.

I've only been on St. John's Wort, which worked like a charm, but once I did find that it worked, I inadvertantly got noncompliant with it.

Also photosensitivity.

Yes, 30 mg of celexa, but not for depression and among a small cocktail of other chemicals.

Other than Oxy one time, when I was having major health issues, aspirin and cough medicine are the hardest drugs I have ever consumed.
