I have a few Christian friends (more on that in another thread at another time), and they mostly just go for the whole Jesus is the savior of the world, the only way to heaven, son of god, saved them from their sins, died for all man's sins, blah, blah, blah...

I can tell you what I used to believe. Yahweh and Jesus were completely separate people, and I liked Jesus more than Yahweh for pretty obvious reasons. Heaven was the place that good people went, and hell was the place that bad people went. I didn't have a concrete idea of what happened in hell, because our preacher rarely talked about it. I thought the idea of having a mansion in heaven was silly, but I wanted to be a good boy, and that's where good people went. I'd just talk it over with Jesus about the details.

I didn't really pray a whole lot, because I didn't hear an audible voice or anything. I wouldn't say I had a personal relationship with him, because I didn't know much about him. Nobody talked about little details that you find out about people you hang out with all the time.

I had heard the verse about Jesus being the only way to heaven, but I was encouraged to mainly do good deeds, and go to church regularly, and I'd get into heaven when the time came.

I also wasn't aware of other religions, and didn't know there were people who didn't think Jesus existed at all. I was quite sheltered.

I guess those are the main details, without getting into touchier subjects like homosexuality, abortion, and such.

Baptist. Though There was a Methodist church down the street I went to as well. I wasn't very aware of denominations back then either. You either were a christian, or you weren't.

I see. Baptists are one of the best known for having fundamentalist views (I'm not saying you were one, it's just a good number are). 

I've noticed you're from Alabama. Were there any Episcopal churches nearby? Or did you know any? That's basically the American branch of the Anglican Church.

Yeah, I've heard that southern baptists can be pretty bad. I have read some things on Fundies Say the Darndest Things that probably would have had me calling the police even in my most devout times. I don't know about episcopal christians, though we had some jehova's witnesses that my grandmother (the most religious member of my close family) said weren't true christians. We also didn't think catholics were christians.
