Mystery of the consciousness

Consciousness has always perplexed me. I'm composed of a bunch of particles, with no life of their own, but formed in this particular way, I am self-aware. Why am I, whatever that is, looking out of these eyes and feeling what happens to this body but not yours?

What's really spooky is that, there is a module in our left hemisphere, the interpreter module, which is responsible for coming up with natural language explanations about what is going on. Separate this module from the right hemisphere by splitting the corpus callosum, and you find that the right brain has a mind of its own.

I have a model which makes sense of consciousness, but prior to my hitting upon this model, the "thereness" of consciousness was as mysterious to me as it is to you; the questions raised are subtle, complex, and profound. I wouldn't be able to navigate them without a relevant model, and that's primarily what's lacking in cognitive science today, a good model of what brain processes result in the phenomenon of consciousness.
