It's like the financial news, there are many attempts to identify trends and see the next one coming and to build some kind of story around it because in a 24/7 news cycle you have to have something to print every hour or so. A couple of summers ago it was probably "Why Comic Book Super Heroes Now Rule Hollywood" or something like that. Next summer it will be "Why Burning Buildings Now Rule Hollywood." Or even this fall. News cycles can't wait that long.

This is true. I think a lot of people just enjoyed them because they were spectacular epics, though.

Hollywood goes through fads. We'll probably get a spate of Biblical/Christian movies for a while until people get tired of them. Something new (as in a genre not seen for a few years) will then start another fad.

I would have thought that Mel Gibson's odious The Passion of the Christ would have given Christians enough torture-porn spank material for years to come. Here's hoping that Hollywood pandering to them proves to be a short-lived fad.
