If you removed any form of moral compass which, coincidentally, atheists do not do. We have our own moral code, constructed from things a little more firm and reasonable than "magic man sez not to, not because he dislikes rape, but because he only wants us to have sex when we're married."

As a rather disturbing consequence though, you have inadvertently revealed the fact that you consider the rape of underage girls to be a pleasant thing, and that the only thing stopping you from doing so is that, indeed, magic man is threatening you if you do. We atheists don't consider rape and pedophilia a "good night out," but you clearly do.

And what wise man in today's society, or your atheist belief system, sets such moral standards? Seeing that MAN is infinitely flawed, what, or more precisely, "who" is king of the jungle for you? It would seem to me the promise of being an atheist should lead me to a conclusion that whatever is good for me, no one else matters. Incoherence aside, I think I get what you meant. I can't answer for other atheists since we have no dogma, but I don't really need anyone to tell me right from wrong on most matters. When there is a complicated or unclear ethical issue I usually speak with others that I know to be trustworthy and generally what I know to be "good".

My moral system, given some thought, is in accordance with a lot of W.D. Ross' prima facie duties (ethical pluralism).

1. Fidelity- keeping one's promises and word
2. Reparation- making up for a wrong (pay attention Christian; this requires me to actually engage the person I have wronged, not my imaginary friend)
3. Gratitude- being grateful to those who have shown me kindness
4. Non-injury- Don't hurt people. Ross also includes not harming them psychologically (no insults and the like) but I don't have time to pamper to idiots.
5. Harm-Prevention- self evident, I apply this within reason.
6. Beneficence- being good to others, promoting good acts. Also a "within reason" type of deal as I don't go out of my way for assholes and people who continuously wrong me.
7. Self-Improvement- self evident.
8. Justice- self evident.
9. Self-Preservation- self evident
10. Respect of Freedom- self evident

Are you seriously so sick and fucked up in the head that you need an almighty to give you morals? That sounds like a personal problem to me. By all means, if you are a horrible monster with no sympathy, empathy, or compassion please keep believing in god and hell.
I, however, need no almighty power to tell me how to behave. No threats of burning for eternity nor promises of eternal bliss are necessary. I am simply not inclined to hurt anyone. I find the idea of inflicting pain on others to be abhorrent. Maybe I am selfish, because I have been told that at some deep level inside I have evolved to be kind to other people because it benefits me to do so. But I don't ever think about it, I never sit around and contemplate shall I be kind and considerate to people or shall I be horrible and cruel, and why?
I just don't ever consider being cruel as an option. It never comes up in my mind until some douche on the internet asks me how I can stop myself from raping and killing if I don't believe in gawd. I know rote learned, simplistic commandments might be appealing to you, and so this might blow your mind, but why does it need to be one person? Why can't we accept a constantly evolving morality that grows as we learn more and share experiences together?

Would you not agree that we're living in reality together, all of us, and that there are certain sets of predictable reactions to stimuli that we generally share? Maybe it's scary to you, to think of having to consider your own morals based on observation and careful justification of the facts we're presented with and how they apply to us, but some of us are more happy to think before we act.

Is it customary on this site to make wild assertions of a persons character or purpose? Should I, in return, be as offensive to sound or appear to have more conviction? Folks, unless you haven't learned yet, just because your louder, angrier, aggressive, or treating, doesn't make you right. I've sat through too many conferences, meetings, or events to be swayed by other's agendas. No matter how passionate!
