Want to be in the community.

Isaac Newton was also religious, albeit a heretic and so were many other brilliant minds. Leonardo certainly believed in God - we don't know exactly what his religious beliefs were, but that much we do know.

And what has made the most important and long-standing contributions to the world - their religious ones or their scientific/artistic?

Also: welcome aboard, new blood!
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

You sound pretty smart for 13. I wish I'd been as awesome...

Welcome to the Forums. Always good to see younger people seeking reason and giving up on mythology.

Did I really say, "younger people"? *Sigh* I'm getting old!

I grew up in a catholic household but my parents are fairly lenient when it comes to religion. We went to a Methodist church for a while when I was little but we eventually left. I guess it became too hard to fit in our schedule. I never really got religion. My parents read me the children's bible but all I got from it was a bunch of colorful stories that made no sense.

Eventually, I caught on but still didn't care. Then I started going to public school. I'm a fairly smart kid and so I got through class easily and suddenly had loads of time to study much more complex things (evolution, anthropology, etc.) I started to realize around the age of 10 it was all total crap (religion was) and I deconverted.

My parents have no idea though. They probably would be shocked and send me to bible camp or something. At school, most people don't know except for a small group of friends. I did manage to convince one to join the "dark side" and become an atheist. We have very spirited discussions of religion and the total garbage it implies.

I will say one thing. Despite ignorance having kept most things the same, religious holidays are awkward when I say grace. I try to say it fast and meaningless. Anyway, I'm glad to see I'm not alone and there are others out there who go through similar stuff. Thanks.

Welcome. You seem to have the same attitude towards religion I had when I became an atheist at the same age (13)

Welcome.

There are indeed many atheists out here. I'm glad to see such a bright new one in our midst.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god.  If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.

Hey, look at that. We're both the best age to be .. the one we are. Actually I teach students just about your age. (Math is the best, don't you think?) I should warn you there is some swearing around here sometimes, but unlike my classroom it is not inappropriate here. Welcome aboard. I look forward to being reminded about my younger self through you. (I hope what ever glimmers you get regarding your future from me are not too depressing.)
