Cold War satellites find lost cities in Middle East

Quote: Images collected by Cold War spy satellites have revealed 10,000 unknown archaeological sites in the Middle East, showing thousands of ancient cities, roads, canals, and other undiscovered ruins.

The new CORONA Atlas shows previously undiscovered sites in Turkey, Iraq and Syria believed to date back to the Bronze Age. University of Arkansas archaeologist Jess Casana said “We can see all kinds of things- ancient roads and canals. The images provide a very comprehensive picture.”

Science - it works.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I have to admit I'm a little concerned by that great big fuck-off crater right in the middle of town.

"The greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions" - Leonardo da Vinci

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

That crater could be a big hill. Then again, this is the Cold War era Middle East. Perhaps old 007's had a go at it.

It's all to do with the direction of the lighting. Viewed the other way up, it would look like a crater. It's hard to tell just from this image.

Good point, but I think it's discernible. Look at the building shadows at the north end of the picture. They are in the same place as the large shadow in the NNE shadow of the crater/hill. For this reason I conclude hill. If it were a crater the building shadows would be cast towards the south.

Best if they keep the locations quiet. The way things are going now the antiquities thieves will be the only ones to profit.

Then the whole thing will be a crater.

Remember the "Face on Mars?"

http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/sci...st24may_1/

Lots of crooks made a fortune peddling the 'conspiracy' to the whackos who insisted that NASA wanted to cover up the civilization on Mars.

When all it was in the end was shitty 1970's technology taking a low-res photo.
