you have to have faith..and there's a purpose

RE: you have to have faith..and there's a purpose
I once had someone tell me that I'm a 'person of faith' because I expect the light bulb to turn on when I flip the wall switch. He said something like, 'You don't know WHAT is going to happen, but expecting the room to light up is an act of faith.'

My response was that since I've flipped wall switches hundred of thousands of times and that the light generally comes on when I do so, my expectation of light is an act of experience, not of faith. I explained that if I were to flip the switch and expect raspberry jam to ooze out of the sockets, THAT would be an act of faith.

He got angry and accused me of comparing God to raspberry jam.

Of course we know what's going to happen when you switch a light on - what a ridiculous thing to say. When you flip the switch, the reasonable expectation is that the light will come on, or if not, there is a reason why. It takes absolutely zero faith to expect the light to come on instead of, say, turning into a butterfly that shits M&Ms.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

By that token, history's greatest murderers were also here for a purpose, and the purpose of those they killed must have been to be victims. One can certainly look back at the path they followed in their life but it's insane to conclude that there's only one path that could possibly have led to the present moment. Had your friend been killed in the car incident, she wouldn't be here to say "how special I am that I wasn't killed - God must want me for some purpose".

this is something I didn't really think about, and it does make an interesting point. the fact that by her saying this she's also saying mass murdered have a purpose too and as you said those killed to have their purpose be victims...kind of puts the "benevolent god" thing into question.

then she said "You have faith I'm a good friend don't you? We all need to have faith in something."

Actually - You do not have FAITH that she is a good friend - you have FACTS that establish or don't establish it.

Ask her what is the purpose of a baby being born dead - have done NOTHING on earth.

I understand the reason for the question, but all you'll get in return is that a pre-historic couple tasted some fruit; therefore, sperm and egg creates something imbued with sin. These fuckers aren't reasonable.

Having faith in something is one thing but having faith in NOTHING is another.

The NOTHING I'm referring to is god. There's nothing there! Every god is invisible for a good reason, there's nothing to see.
