Piss poor parenting.
+ Piss poor economy. = Self perpetuating cycle of obesity People fall into by depression, running out of money and buying cheap unhealthy foods, raised by a hamplanet, etc,. I feel bad for them. Slave to the Patriarchy no more

People tend towards monotony - consider your tonnes of bananas suggestion carefully - but hate experiencing it.
Eating the same old must be rather tiring and depressing. Not knowing how to eat better is depressing too. It's like being told you have to fly but you don't know how. Yes, I'd say poverty really restricts an already restricted subset of choices. It's not all, but you are dealing with people - emotions, background matter. Slave to the Patriarchy no more
Well it depends. My cousin for example can't help it, no matter how hard he tries he will always be the way. Like Moros said it is sometimes bad parenting and bad economy. Other times it is shear laziness and poor diet.

It's also lack of opportunity.
We throw kids into schools for several hours a day, then don't monitor them for several more while we continue working. I wasn't allowed to go outside of my circular street when I got home - preferably, I was supposed to stay inside doing homework. So 7 hours a day I was in school - most of that time I didn't have a gym class that did anything special. For 3-4 hours after that, I was supposed to be sitting doing homework. Exercise came only after that (if it was light enough outside and I had finished the exorbitant amount of homework high school heaped on me) or on the weekends (same deal). It was probably a good thing we had high metabolisms and my parents were affluent enough to afford fresh fruit for snacks. |
