Evidence of how our Moon formed... found?
#11
RE: Evidence of how our Moon formed... found?
A question is begged from this giant impact hypothesis.

Is a collision between two astronomical bodies essential for life?

We know our planet has a global 'ocean' of magma and strong magnetic core. Volcanoes though destructive, are essential for plant life upon which animal life and food chains are ultimately dependent, regenerating the planet's surface and spewing out much-needed minerals.

Considering our world is in the Goldilocks zone, the habitable region from the parent star.

And an outer gas giant, such as Jupiter is also fundamental in its role as a "cosmic vacuum" catching the majority of stray asteroids and comets that might otherwise obliterate life in its early evolutionary stages on this developing world.

It seems the criteria for life, is getting more and more and more strict and unrelenting, the more we learn about our hostile cosmos.

Maybe it depends on what kind of life you're looking for - Biological Communities In Hydrothermal Vents

Quote:Although life is very sparse at these depths, black smokers are the centers of entire ecosystems. Sunlight is nonexistent, so many organisms – such as archaea and extremophiles – convert the heat, methane, and sulfur compounds provided by black smokers into energy through a process called chemosynthesis. More complex life forms, such as clams and tubeworms, feed on these organisms. The organisms at the base of the food chain also deposit minerals into the base of the black smoker, therefore completing the life cycle.

A species of phototrophic bacterium has been found living near a black smoker off the coast of Mexico at a depth of 2,500 m (8,200 ft). No sunlight penetrates that far into the waters. Instead, the bacteria, part of the Chlorobiaceae family, use the faint glow from the black smoker for photosynthesis. This is the first organism discovered in nature to exclusively use a light other than sunlight for photosynthesis.[14]

This opens up the possibilities for life outside the Goldilocks zone - Europa - Potential For Extraterrestial Life

Quote:Europa has emerged as one of the top locations in the Solar System in terms of potential habitability and the possibility of hosting extraterrestrial life.[106] Life could exist in its under-ice ocean, perhaps subsisting in an environment similar to Earth's deep-ocean hydrothermal vents. Life in such an ocean could possibly be similar to microbial life on Earth in the deep ocean.[78][107] So far, there is no evidence that life exists on Europa, but the likely presence of liquid water has spurred calls to send a probe there.[108]

Even if it turns out that there isn't life on Europa it could still be elsewhere in the universe in regions outside the Goldilocks zone.

Its extraordinary to think that our planet and our natural satellite could have formed from such an event.

You'd think there be nothing but debris, another asteroid belt around the Sun.

Life can still emerge in the universe in the most improbable of places. ^^

Uh oh. That means Zacharia Sitchin's claim of the translations of the Ancient Sumerian tablets may contain some truth. They say the earth is the remaining portion of a cataclyamic event. So the earth was bigger. The earth collided with another planet called Tiamat (not sure if that's the name given to the full earth or other planet that collided with earth). The moon is also a result of that collision.

Hmm, just when I thought I had escaped all that bullshit. Suddenly it could be true.

Stitchin Ideas and Works

Quote:According to Sitchin's interpretation of Mesopotamian iconography and symbology, outlined in his 1976 book The 12th Planet and its sequels, there is an undiscovered planet beyond Neptune that follows a long, elliptical orbit, reaching the inner solar system roughly every 3,600 years. This planet is called Nibiru (although Jupiter was the planet associated with the god Marduk in Babylonian cosmology).[5] According to Sitchin, Nibiru (whose name was replaced with MARDUK in original legends by the Babylonian ruler of the same name in an attempt to co-opt the creation for himself, leading to some confusion among readers) collided catastrophically with Tiamat (a goddess in the Babylonian creation myth the Enûma Eliš), which he considers to be another planet once located between Mars and Jupiter. This collision supposedly formed the planet Earth, the asteroid belt, and the comets. Sitchin states that when struck by one of planet Nibiru's moons, Tiamat split in two, and then on a second pass Nibiru itself struck the broken fragments and one half of Tiamat became the asteroid belt. The second half, struck again by one of Nibiru's moons, was pushed into a new orbit and became today's planet Earth.

Only as far as something might have collided with something.

Quote:According to Sitchin, Nibiru (called "the twelfth planet" because, Sitchin claimed, the Sumerians' gods-given conception of the Solar System counted all eight planets, plus Pluto, the Sun and the Moon) was the home of a technologically advanced human-like extraterrestrial race called the Anunnaki in Sumerian myth, who Sitchin states are called the Nephilim in Genesis.

Sitchin wrote that Enki suggested that to relieve the Anunnaki, who had mutinied over their dissatisfaction with their working conditions, that primitive workers (Homo sapiens) be created by genetic engineering as slaves to replace them in the gold mines by crossing extraterrestrial genes with those of Homo erectus.[6][7]

Nobody's found any evidence for extraterrestrial genes in the human genome so I think we're safe when it comes to bullshit. Smile

Where is this planet called Theia, how could they know what they were comparing.

GC

Where is it? It crashed into the earth in the early development of the solar system when things weren't so settled and lots of stuff was still floating around. Why do you care, since you young earth creationists think just about every branch of science is a fraud.

RE: Evidence of how our Moon formed... found?
That is true, the Moon was formed from an Impact sustained by the Earth.
Our moon is very unique because it is large compared to the size of our planet.

the fact that the Moon was formed from an impact from an impacting event explains a few things.
1. the Earth's density, the Earth is denser than it should be. Has a larger metal core than is should have, this is because it is theorized that the Earth has a combined metal core from the object that impacted it.
2. the moon has almost no metals. Most of the metal was captured by the Earth. The moon is less dense than it should be for its place in the solar system.

Known as Catastrophic Theory: about 4 1/2 billion years ago an object the size of of Mars smashed into the Earth, as a glancing blow creating the Moon from the ejecting material.
Whatever unseen, no matter how improbable, must be the cause.

Also referred to as the period of "The Great Bombardment". The Mars sized object was theorized to have been traveling at a speed of 250,000 mph when it smashed into the Earth. The debris from the impact formed into two smaller "moons" which circled the Earth at a very rapid rate. The two later collided to form our Moon. So a similar theory goes.
