Once you come to the understanding that the comfort is as fraudulent as the lie which supplied it, it will be better for you. And, given enough time, you will understand it. I understand what you're going through.
Either way, you're mostly helpless. It's a little bit easier knowing that I'm helpless against the random, dumb forces of the universe, rather than the active malice of a cruel and hateful god.

I went through an angry stage. I was pissed to find out the very thing that I thought was saving the world, was ruining the world and not taking responsibility for the aftermath. I think if I had to pinpoint where my anger lie, it was with the irresponsibleness of people. I felt burdened for awhile knowing that ignorance reigns supreme and I'm quite possibly the least effective person on this planet.
Here's the thing though. I decided to accept my world for the way it is and move forward in bettering it. One piece of trash at a time, one load of dishes saved at a time, and I now focus on being the best person I can be--for me.
That, that's priceless.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Yeah, I hear you. The truth is just the truth. It doesn't come with frequent flyer miles. But yeah, I miss believing God had my back.
More hobbies btw I do NOT need. I already have the weekly dilemma of poker or jiu jitsu, my longbow is getting its summer workout, my ps3 gathers dust and I've started writing my monthly column for my industry journal again. I have a wife, 2 kids and work about 45 hours a week  . It's just harder to cope without my imaginary friend.

Welcome back Jacob. I missed you on the forum because your comments were usually reasonable and respectful, even if you didn't agree. Let me suggest that part of your problem is that you're looking for the point of view that causes you to receive the most benefits rather that what is the truth. Christianity isn't about what benefits you can get from it, but is about believing in and following God. We do reap benefits, but we also suffer along the way. Life is tough here and there's no escape from it. I struggle, but I receive comfort from knowing the truth and serving someone greater than myself and I look forward to something much better. Neither atheism, christianity or any other belief is going to make this world a playground. It seems apparent that your search may not be over and I do wish you the best.

Christians frequently have a thirst for knowledge, but this thirst rarely extends beyond attempting to find reasons to justify a belief you'll hold even though you can't honestly justify it.
