That's exactly the nature of the problem - the path of reality in this situation is to be a potential messiah in a very dystopian future, or in the case of Cypher, to be saved from the reality of a war that has no end and returned to a life of relative comfort.

Most of us value a harsh truth over a comforting lie, but the dichotomy here makes it more difficult, I think.
