New Here
I am not new to atheism, but am new here. This is my third post and I also posted in the Religion and Other Religion sections. I am a Baha'i who sees no evidence for the existence of a God or gods, hence a nontheist Baha'i. I also see evidence in the Baha'i writings justifying my position, hence why I am a Baha'i. You can find my justifications and logic in my blog if you search in Google for "nontheist Bahai".

Why am I here? To meet you and to sharpen my logic and reason.

One thing that recently snagged me a bit was theodicy. This is I feel the strongest argument for the existence of God. If evil exists so the human soul can develop, why would a religious person not commit evil to help others advance? Why reduce other's people pain if pain is "good"? An answer may be that doing good is the duty of humans, but it is God who does "evil". But why doesn't this mean that God is evil? Perhaps because all evil helps the humans to grow spiritually. .... This just seems pretty strong to me.

Any other criticisms against theodicy I haven't thought of?

Welcome aboard, sounds like you have some ideas rattling around between your ears. You should start some threads in the relevant subheaders. We generally refrain from debating (and heated convos) in the introductions section as a courtesy to new members.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Welcome

Look forward to a thread or two on theodicy.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Where is the best place to put a thread on theodicy? This is the one thing that's making me question atheism.

RE: New Here
"Three core principles establish a basis for Bahá'í teachings and doctrine: the unity of God, that there is only one God who is the source of all creation; the unity of religion, that all major religions have the same spiritual source and come from the same God; and the unity of humanity, that all humans have been created equal, and that diversity of race and culture are seen as worthy of appreciation and acceptance."

Just curious, is this the Baha'i that you believe in? I had to look it up because I had never heard of it before.

Anyways, welcome to AF Big Grin

Yes this is it. My contention is that "God" is metaphorical though it appears frequently in Bahai books. So basically the info on wiki is ummm misleading.
