UK Govt to make it legal to access internet & phone records

UK Govt to make it legal to access internet & phone records
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-28237111

Quote:The legislation is primarily aimed at the companies that provide us with telephone and internet connections. It outlines their legal obligation to retain "communications data" on their customers. This metadata includes things like logs of when calls were made, what numbers were dialled, and other information that can be used, the government says, in investigations. It does not include the content of the communications.

Done in the name of security, naturally.

And I, for one, am ashamed by this. Whilst it's currently illegal in most cases for the government to gain access to the content of calls/emails/texts (although this isn't always the case), it's pretty clear that in the coming years this will be made legal through additions to this law.

The fact that this has cross party support sickens me. And the US thought they had it bad! I believe the following is a misquote but regardless, it sums this up nicely:

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Benjamin Franklin

It's ridiculous that they just throw up terrorists as a scapegoat still. What have terrorists actually done here recently? Whenever I see terrorists they are sat in the desert with AK's or in handcuffs outside a block of flats once or twice a year. They really don't seem to be struggling to stop these terrorist plots. Half the time it turns out it's actually a couple of losers who only ever managed to pull of the Google search to some jihadists site. Heck, the worst terrorist act recently was those machete assholes and that required no planning at all. No amount of snooping would have prevented that happening.

Reality is that no matter how clever you try to be, if somebody really wants to fuck with you they will, and its few and far between that they do. They keep bringing up the guys that went to fight in Syria and how much of a threat they will be. How are they going to be a threat when you know exactly who they are already!?

Over here the "terrorists" usually turn out to be some assholes who were recruited by FBI informants.

The FBI probably has more terror "plots" going than al-Qaeda at the moment. Of course, they they jump in and arrest the "terrorists" before they can carry out the nefarious plans that the FBI put them up to.

Big fucking heroes.

Sounds legit according to 'public order' reasons ROFLOL

Wasn't the UK that banned pornography with hardcore or stimulated rape content?

No I don't think so. But it has created an 'opt in' whereby people will have to physically tell their ISP that they want access to porn. Ridiculous. And in the guise of 'protecting children'. :-|

If the govt was hellbent on doing this then they should have created an opt out process, but that was rejected.

I'm not affiliated to either side of the political spectrum here but fuck me Dave and his cronies are really pissing me off

I have no idea, I know it was suggested but once the headlines go you don't here shit about what happens. Thats another issue I have with the terrorist bullshit. You get "BREAKING NEWS! 3 ARRESTED UNDER TERRORISM CHARGES!!!" then you either never hear anything more, or you get hidden amongst the news "3 men arrested on terrorist charges given 10 months for some bullshit that means they considered terrorism once."

I think after he pushed for gay marriage he's trying to prove he's a christian after all by shoving his fringe morality down everyone throats under the guise of protecting children.

Probably after the London riots.. The police thought they were clever because they know how to read tweets and facebook status'.

I believe the introduction of legislation designed to prevent search engine queries specifically on child abuse images was discussed but I don't think it's been introduced. It could have been but I'm not aware of it.

RE: the rape discussion. I can't think of any legislation that has brought this into affect but if you find something that'd be helpful. I would look but I'm really tired at the moment and I've got a long day at work tomorrow. I'll have look over the weekend and do some digging. My knowledge of legislation in this area is limited, especially since Dave seems to have unleashed a litany of nonsense policies and benchmarks about it that is effectively just grandstanding for Daily Mail readers and older christians.

I have to say I'm not bothered by this: a phone record is a pretty minor detail, unless it is going to break your alibi on a big mob hit or something. EVEN IF they recorded my phone conversations and converted them to text-- if the government wants to hear about my wife's shopping list, or my opinions about the game of soccer-- they can go for it.

Liberty to act and speak is one thing. But should we have liberty to do everything under the cover of darkness and anonymity? Should be be allowed to walk around with ski masks because we don't want to be identified? I don't think so. Sometimes the defence of liberty is really an announcement of an intent to violate (or potentially violate) the social contract. I'm willing to give up some of my privacy if it allows the government a better means to flush out the pedos and the shoe bombers.
