Apparently football is a sin now

RE: Apparently football is a sin now
Quote:Yeah, that's the ticket, they outta get the hell out of the place they were born, where all of their family is at. It's either that or upset the bigots applecart. Wouldn't want to do that, I suppose.

Lets try this again Black -if- 80% of the people in your country supported facism, what would you do, and would you wonder why others, who might want to stay - would "want to break the law"?
If fascism was about to be implement I would emigrate immediately along with my loved ones. Until it was implemented and we were still a democracy, I would fight against it and promote democracy. And yes I would understand why others would want to break the law, because they don't want tyranny, but it's unpractical for me to just risk my life when I can leave and find a better place to live, a country where 80% population supports fascism is not a very healthy one either way.
Quote:No, I'm suggesting that the russian apologetics I've seen in this thread is weak, and frankly- disgusting.
I'll make this clear again, I'm not a Russian apologetic, I'm merely saying I don't care about hosting the world cup there, and as far as we know they could ban the law until 2018, it's 4 years. I call this merely impartiality, if Saudi Arabia had good conditions and their laws weren't enforced on foreign citizens and athletes, I wouldn't mind hosting the world cup there. See where I'm going? As long as they can host it financially, I don't give a fuck about their laws, even if I hate them it won't affect the sports competition. I will continue to see the world cup and enjoy it. I didn't agree that Brazil hosted it, I found the solution quite irrational, but I didn't complain about it constantly. And Brazil has serious problems, starting with extremely high criminality and overpopulation of prisons, followed by abyssal disproportion between social classes and lot's of poverty, I find hosting the world cup there just as reprehensible as in Russia (but for different reasons), but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the WC
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

Yeah, you don't give a shit about inequality and injustice. I thought we'd already established that.

Actually the religion I dislike most is Islam... Should my country teams stop playing with russian football teams and arab teams just because they don't respect human rights? That's not how it works in the real world, open your eyes, as long as there is profit it is acceptable. Is my view pessimistic and inhumane? Yes, but I'm being realistic. You may not like it, but that's how reality works

I understand, and I wouldn't fault you. Some of us don't think that running away from a bully solves anything. How many times would you have to relocate before you said "fuck this shit, I'm staying right here"? I'm assuming that you're heterosexual, so this just isn't a place that you'd make a principled stand - and I could spend pages explaining to you why it touches on issues other than where you put your pecker....but I bet you already get that, so I'll spare us all the trouble.

You'd be ignoring/wasting a wonderful tool for positive social change. But everyone has their own opinion, of course.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Oh I'm not disputing it happens. But again, you just accept it as fine. I'm done, really no point carrying on labouring this.

Against fascism the situation is not easy... Some people need me, I would die fighting for freedom, but my relatives and loved ones need me and I don't want to die without having kids first, it's just my call.

I added some edited stuff on the last reply about brazil. Do you really think not hosting the world cup there would change anything? They need activism on the inside, the best weapon we can use is putting their people against the government. If we could make Russians not hate gays, that'd be great. Perhaps informing people and society discretely to reduce the hate on gays would be good? Or maybe distributing papers about tolerance and respect for homosexuality? (I don't think this last part is considered illegal by the law if it's not aimed at minors)... Who knows...

Agree. And to answer our former debate, as I said to Rhythm, the best way to change Russia's law is to change society's mentality, but it should be done subliminally or discreetly to avoid breaking the law. Spreading information, teaching people being gay is not a choice, that everyone is equal, etc... Putin said one of the reasons the law was made is because Russian's hate gays (and not only old people but also young and middle aged people), if we could change people's mentality, then perhaps Russian would ban the law... If you got the impression I support tyranny and taking people's rights then I'll clear your head, I don't, I really don't, I just want to see things and deal with them realistically

You'd die fighting for freedom, unless it was some homosexuals freedom -simply to be himself- then you'd pack your bags and leave.

The next best thing is pointing out their bigotry and misuse of authority, and something as visible as the world cup is a wonderful way to do so. People don't watch you and I discuss this by the millions. They tune into the world cup.
(751 mill, as of the 2006 cup..dont have numbers for this last one, bet they're over a billion by now, biggest single event sporting competition on earth.)

I'd fight for homosexuals freedom. I'm a supporter of equality for marriage and adoption, and was one of the few people that supported the gay marriage law when it was made back in 2010
