The Republicans since the Democrats wield disproportionate power in California. For a state that's almost 50-50 in terms of national elections, it usually (well maybe always) votes Democrat and that is only from two cities in the state. The majority of Californian territory votes Republican, and from what I have seen from these Republicans, if the GOP from the other states acted like them, the Democrats wouldn't have a chance in power.

Splitting California does indeed favor Republican Party in presidential elections because it would break up California's block of 55 electoral votes, which is fairly securely democratic due to the state's overall alignment. But California has a big minority of rather right wing republicans whose areas from contiguous blocks. In a broken up California, republicans would undoubtedly attempt to consolidate their areas and would be able to poach perhaps 20 additional electoral votes from California's 55. That would be a net gain for the republicans and net loss for the democrats.

If CA is like New York, then I think it would benefit Republicans. Lots of conservatives upstate and in Long Island, but NYC is overwhelmingly Democrat and makes up over 40% of the population (and if you check the relative size of NYC to the rest of the state, you can understand why I'm leaving!).

I suggest a simpler solution. Only states which contributes more tax money to the federal government than it receives in federal fundings and subsidies in return gets to participate in presidential elections and send senators and representatives to congress.
States which are eligible to participate should be given electoral votes and house seats in proportion to net positive contribution it makes to the federal government.

Draper is a fucking toad. To hell with him. California in its current state (heh) can shift around funds to impoverished regions.
If it is split up, being able to support those less economic regions will vanish. Some of the six new states would take up more federal tax money than ever give any. As it stands, the state of California is able to yield more than it takes.
Draper is only doing this for his own selfish bastard interest. Shame we can't string him up.
