Feel Embarassed or regret by ones religous past?
#11
RE: Feel Embarassed or regret by ones religous past?
I was raised Methodist.

Aside from looking down my nose at other religions when in the exclusive company of my fellow Methodists, I don't really recall being a douche about it.

Sunday school and church services sucked, but the teen activities were a blast. I think I derived quite a bit of good from it, but maybe not quite in the way the activities were intended.

{snicker}

Had my first 'innocent' gay experience on a church bus. The guy sitting next to me fell asleep and wound up with his head on my shoulder. I REALLY enjoyed that. I think I was 15.

I'm regretful of time wasted praying and learning about God and Jesus. Fucking hell church was boring.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

Embarassed? Regret? No. More like "betrayed" or "hurt". 6 years of my life was spent in the worst guild anyone could ever feel, all because I was going through puberty and my parents didn't even try to give me the Christian BS about sex. All I got was a sitdown chat from them about how porn is wrong, and how I was going to go to a "therapist" to "deal" with my "porn addiction".

When I got to college, I went to 1 Campus Crusade for Christ meeting, and decided it wasn't for me.

I did attend a Unitarian church from 79 to 83. Not that they were religious or anything.

I've had 28 years in 12 Steppers, but the religious/spiritual aspects didn't really grate on me as the ecumenical angle to the whole thing for me neutralized it.

I think for me religion was a great stepping stone, I discovered many great metaphors and deep truths that helped me throughout my life, but sadly when I became associated within the atheist way of thinking, I was disappointed, I thought that Christians were arrogant, but I have now realized that they are very tame compared to what I have experience with the atheist cycle, very disappointed.

Honestly not calling you out, mate, but could you expand on what you meant by 'wrong ethnicity'?

Reading that was so funny because it was completely unexpected.

Nah. As a kid attending Sunday School, I was just trying to make Mom happy. Fortunately, my father was a loud-mouthed skeptic, which kept me grounded so that I never really believed it. So, obviously, I never recruited anyone into Christianity; I definitely would regret having done such an inhumane thing.

Actually, I am glad I had a background which included learning about Christianity from the inside. It led me to investigate the origins of the religion and to read the Bible objectively. That, of course, led me to acknowledging that I am an atheist. And, being an atheist led me to forums such as this where I enjoy reading posts by intelligent people.

Should have picked better parents. Sucks to be raised by assholes.

Being White in pre-1900 Japan. Being Black in America. Being a Palestinian in Israel. Being a Jew in Nazi Germany. Etc. There are places and situations where it is socially disadvantageous to be of a certain race, and there are still a shitton of racists in the world.
