Not quite. The bastards are frightened to get their god damned tickets to the happy place stamped. Clearly we can establish motive.

A religious saying I'm particularly not fond of is the one that goes something like "You can't serve two masters." In this case, the 'master' which would lead one to want to nurture and protect their child is in conflict with the 'master' that would lead one to be an unquestioning and obedient child toward the dictates of ones God as pronounced by ones church. If God tells you to gut your kid, you're just supposed to fucking do it. Don't back sass God.
