Eastern Ukraine is lost to Russia outright, The only question is how much blood will be shed in the process, and how much of the Russian puppet any government in the rest of Ukraine will be after the end of the conflict. The appeal of west over Russia in Ukraine was never as strong as ideological western propaganda would have portrayed it. The chance of the US sponsored regime change to lever Ukraine decisively out of Russian orbit was always slim, while the risks involved always grossly underestimated by the US state department.
This is an conflict of national interests between the US and Russia. And the US enjoyed the Yeltsin days of a pushover Russia so much that we've been in denial ever since about the fact that Yeltsin is no longer in charge, and we wish for the return of the happy days of Russian keeling over whenever Clinton snapped his finger that we've taken to vilifying any Russians leader who would defend Russia's real national interests.
